Job description

Electrical and Instrumentation Field Inspector (Natural Gas)

Location: Viking, MN
Engagement: 12 Months (contract)

What your day looks like

Each morning, you’ll meet with the Chief Inspector or Resident Engineer—your direct lead depending on the assignment—and plan the day’s inspections. You’ll walk the site verifying that electrical, communications, and instrumentation work is installed exactly as designed. Drawings, plans, specifications, and Contract Documents are your compass; you confirm the build matches the blueprint on construction projects tied to natural gas pipelines and industrial facilities.

As equipment powers up, you’ll evaluate data acquisition systems and both pneumatic and electrical control systems. Your expertise in the current edition of the National Electrical Code (ANSI/NFPA 70), as applied under Code of Federal Regulations Title 49 Part 192, guides your decisions in the field. Throughout the day, you’ll document findings in a detailed inspector’s log, prepare clear inspection reports, and raise safety observations immediately to the Chief Inspector and the Safety Inspector.

Core responsibilities
  • Ensure all Electrical, Communication, and Instrumentation installations conform to drawings, plans, specifications, and Contract Documents.
  • Apply working knowledge of electrical, communications, and instrumentation systems specific to natural gas pipeline and industrial environments.
  • Assess data acquisition systems along with pneumatic and electrical control systems for correct installation and function.
  • Use the accepted edition of the NEC (ANSI/NFPA 70) within CFR Title 49 Part 192 to evaluate compliance.
  • Stay current with approved-for-construction drawings and company specifications.
  • Understand the Contract Documents as they relate to inspection scope and responsibilities.
  • Maintain a comprehensive inspector’s log and submit timely, accurate inspection reports.
  • Champion a proactive safety culture; immediately report safety issues to the Chief Inspector and Safety Inspector.
  • Verify that all materials installed meet Company requirements.
  • Discuss design changes or material substitutions with the Chief Inspector/Resident Engineer and obtain Company approval before work proceeds.
  • Keep the Chief Inspector/Resident Engineer informed about daily issues and any anticipated challenges.
What you bring
  • 5+ years as an Electrical Inspector/Technician or journeyman, including at least 2 years in pipeline or plant work focused on electrical power and control system construction methods.
  • Familiarity with National Electrical Code (N.E.C.) guidelines.
  • Meets the basic qualifications of a Utility Inspector (basic inspector).
