Job description

Fire Preventer (Active Secret Clearance Required)

Location: Norfolk & Portsmouth Shipyards, Hampton Roads, VA
Schedule: Full-Time | Overtime Available
Security Clearance: Active Secret Clearance Required

Position Summary

Tidewater Staffing is seeking Fire Preventers to support Navy ship repair, maintenance, and modernization projects in the Hampton Roads area. This position is responsible for monitoring hot work operations, identifying fire hazards, maintaining fire prevention equipment, and helping ensure a safe work environment aboard vessels and within shipyard facilities.

Candidates must possess an active Secret Security Clearance and be able to work in a fast-paced shipyard environment.

Responsibilities
  • Monitor welding, cutting, grinding, brazing, and other hot work operations.
  • Conduct fire watch and fire prevention inspections before, during, and after hot work activities.
  • Identify and eliminate potential fire hazards within assigned work areas.
  • Maintain fire extinguishers and other fire prevention equipment in a ready state.
  • Monitor surrounding compartments and adjacent spaces for sparks, smoke, heat transfer, or other hazards.
  • Ensure compliance with NAVSEA requirements, shipyard regulations, and client safety procedures.
  • Complete required fire watch logs, permits, and documentation.
  • Report unsafe conditions, incidents, and near misses to supervision immediately.
  • Assist during emergency situations and support site safety efforts as needed.
  • Maintain clear communication with supervisors, safety personnel, and production teams.
Qualifications
  • Active Secret Security Clearance required.
  • Previous Fire Preventer, Fire Watch, Industrial Safety, or Shipyard experience preferred.
  • Ability to recognize and respond to potential fire hazards.
  • Strong attention to detail and situational awareness.
  • Ability to work independently and remain alert throughout assigned shifts.
  • Reliable transportation and dependable attendance.
Preferred Qualifications
  • OSHA 10 or OSHA 30
  • Fire Watch or Fire Prevention Training
  • CPR / First Aid Certification
  • Shipyard experience
  • Confined Space Training
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to climb ladders, stairs, and vessel access points.
  • Ability to work aboard ships, in dry docks, and in industrial environments.
  • Ability to work in confined spaces and varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to stand, walk, and patrol work areas for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to wear required PPE, including respirators when required.
