Home Based Fact Checking information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Home Based Fact Checker, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Home Based Fact Checker, you need strong research skills, attention to detail, and a background in journalism, communications, or a related field. Familiarity with databases, citation tools, and fact-checking platforms like Snopes or FactCheck.org is often required. Critical thinking, time management, and clear written communication help distinguish top performers in this role. These skills ensure the accuracy and credibility of published content, which is vital for maintaining trust and integrity in media and information dissemination.

What is home based fact checking?

Home based fact checking is a remote job where individuals verify the accuracy of information in articles, reports, or other content from their own home. Fact checkers research claims, consult reliable sources, and ensure that published information is correct and properly cited. This role is essential for media organizations, publishers, and content creators who want to maintain credibility and avoid spreading misinformation. Home based fact checkers typically need strong research, critical thinking, and attention to detail skills, as well as access to trustworthy databases and resources.

What is the difference between Home Based Fact Checking vs Content Reviewer?

Both roles are essential for maintaining information integrity online.

What are some common challenges faced by home-based fact checkers and how can they be managed?

Home-based fact checkers often encounter challenges such as managing time effectively, staying focused in a remote setting, and accessing credible sources for verification. To address these, setting a structured work schedule, creating a dedicated workspace, and utilizing reputable databases and fact-checking tools are effective strategies. Additionally, regular communication with editors and fellow fact checkers can help clarify information and ensure consistency across projects. Staying updated with best practices in research and verification is also crucial for maintaining accuracy.

Your New Role...
CNN Fact Check is a quality-control function responsible for reviewing content to ensure that CNN's journalism meets the highest standards of accuracy and fact-based reporting. The team reviews dozens of pieces each week across both linear television and digital platforms, spanning everything from daily reporter packages and digital articles to complex, in-depth enterprise and investigative reporting.
Fact Check researchers play a critical role in the editorial approval process prior to broadcast and publication. They assess content for factual accuracy and work closely with editorial teams to strengthen reporting through additional background, sourcing, and context where needed.
In addition to daily content review, researchers contribute to special projects that require deeper, more comprehensive research. The role operates within a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment, requiring the ability to efficiently leverage a wide range of research tools and resources.
The Fact Check team is an integral part of CNN's editorial workflow, helping ensure that reporting across all platforms is accurate, storytelling is strong, and content is vetted and approved in a timely and responsible manner.
Your Role Accountabilities...
  • Checking all verifiable facts in reporter scripts and other content for the CNN Networks, CNN Digital and CNN Newsource, including documentaries and some affiliate reports.
  • The researchers help manage the workflow of Fact Check Editors and work closely with them on approving scripts.
  • They also prepare background information and deep research for special projects and during rolling coverage or breaking news.
  • The Fact Check researchers sometimes support field correspondents by assisting package producers.
  • This position is pre-eminently an editorial one, demanding detailed up-to-date knowledge of news stories, an ability to find and marshal reliable sources and communicate effectively with show EPs, reporters and The Fact Check Editors.

Qualifications & Experience...
  • Successful candidate will have strong analytical skills, attention to detail, the ability to find answers to very specific questions - as well as an intense interest in events here and around the world.
  • Applicants must have professional-level knowledge of Spanish and English.
  • Some editorial experience at either university or post-graduation required.
  • Substantial practical experience using online sources for research is required.
  • Field reporting or production experience at university or post-graduation desirable.
  • Prior research experience or experience as a newsroom assistant or AP Style desirable.
  • The ability to work quickly under pressure and collaborate closely with others is essential.

How We Get Things Done...
