Job description

Job Description

Montgomery College is seeking an experienced Electrical Engineer to serve as a subject matter expert for electrical design across 3 multi‑building campuses. Under the supervision of the College Architect, this role is responsible for power and lighting designs and the supervision of in‑house and contracted construction of electrical, lighting, and low‑voltage building and control systems. This position is ideal for a licensed professional who enjoys owning projects end‑to‑end, partnering closely within internal clients, and seeing their designs move from concept to construction.

If you enjoy solving complex problems in the field, communicating with a wide range of stakeholders, and seeing your designs become reality, this role offers an opportunity to make a visible, lasting impact.

The typical work schedule for this position is Monday – Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. This is a grade 33, non‑bargaining, exempt position located at Central Services in Rockville.

Montgomery College promotes and creates a working and learning environment rooted in the basic tenets of fairness, belonging, and inclusiveness.

What You Will Do

As the College’s in‑house electrical engineering expert, you will lead electrical design for new construction and renovation projects and support projects through construction completion.

Key Responsibilities
  • Developing complete electrical design documents including power and lighting plans, lighting schedules, riser diagrams, and specifications suitable for permitting and construction.
  • Designing electrical, lighting, fire alarm, and control systems for new construction and renovation projects.
  • Meeting users to determine electrical requirements for each project, investigating existing conditions, researching existing designs, and advising the College architect of any electrical problems discovered.
  • Signing and sealing plans for submission to the City of Rockville and Montgomery County.
  • Preparing engineering drawings for both in‑house and contracted construction work.
  • Managing the permitting process with governmental agencies.
  • Collaborating with the Procurement Department to prepare bids for contracted construction work.
  • Inspecting construction while in process to ensure it is completed in accordance with designs.
  • Project managing and overseeing outside contractors during construction.
  • Reviewing and approving contractor pay application submissions.
  • Providing technical advice on design and construction needs to other college units.
  • Reviewing all engineering drawings, plans, details, and specifications prepared by outside consultants for technical accuracy and coordination.
  • Inspecting engineering systems in existing facilities.
  • Developing capital replacement plans in collaboration with the College Architect and Director of Planning, Engineering and Capital Budgets.
  • Investigating, identifying, and resolving engineering problems associated with electrical, lighting, fire alarm, and control systems.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering.
  • Four (4) or more years of progressively responsible experience in electrical engineering for buildings.
  • Maryland Professional Engineer (PE) license and a valid driver’s license.
  • Demonstrated experience designing and constructing electrical systems for commercial or higher education buildings.
  • Strong working knowledge of energy conservation and sustainable strategies, electrical and life safety codes, lighting and fire safety alarms, and construction methodologies.
  • Ability to perform photometric calculations for lighting designs.
  • The equivalent combination of education, training, certifications, or experience that demonstrates the ability to effectively perform the essential functions of the job may be considered.
  • Eligible applicants must currently be authorized to work in the United States and not require employer visa sponsorship.
Required Licenses and Certifications
  • Driver’s License – Motor Vehicle Administration
  • Maryland Professional Engineer (PE) license.
Preferred Qualifications
  • LEED Green Associate (GA) certification
  • LEED Accredited Professional (AP) certification

Salary range: $86,709 – $119,224 annually. Initial salary placement for new hires falls between the minimum and midpoint of the range and is based on relevant candidate experience and internal equity. The maximum salary for this position is $151,740 annually.
