Home Based Electrical Engineer Student information

What is the difference between Home Based Electrical Engineer Student vs Electrical Engineering Intern?

AspectHome Based Electrical Engineer StudentElectrical Engineering Intern
CredentialsEnrolled in electrical engineering program, no professional license requiredTypically students or recent graduates, no license needed
Work EnvironmentPrimarily remote, home-based tasks, online collaborationOn-site or remote, often in company offices or labs
Employer & Industry UsageEducational projects, freelance work, remote researchCompany internships, industry training programs

Home Based Electrical Engineer Students focus on learning and remote project work, often without formal employment, while Electrical Engineering Interns gain practical industry experience through structured internships, sometimes on-site. Both roles involve similar credentials but differ mainly in purpose and work setting.

Can you work from home with a home based electrical engineer student?

A home-based electrical engineering student can perform certain tasks remotely, such as designing circuits, analyzing data, or using simulation software. However, practical work like testing, installations, or on-site inspections typically require physical presence and hands-on experience. Remote work opportunities depend on the specific role, skills, and whether the employer allows telecommuting for student positions.

What can I do with a BS in electrical engineering?

A home-based electrical engineer student with a BS in electrical engineering can pursue careers in designing, testing, and maintaining electrical systems, including power distribution, electronics, and control systems. They can work in industries such as manufacturing, telecommunications, or renewable energy, often using tools like CAD software and gaining certifications like PE or EIT to advance their careers.

Job description

Electrical Engineer (Industrial Automation – Overhead Crane Systems)
Location: Roanoke, VA
Salary: Up to $125,000 per year
Hire Type: Direct Hire
Compensation & Benefits: Medical, Dental, Vision, PTO, 401k and more

Overview
We are seeking an Electrical Engineer to support the design of control systems used to automate overhead cranes and material handling systems in industrial environments.
This role blends electrical hardware design with automation systems, allowing you to work on complex, real-world applications where software, controls, and electrical design come together to move critical operations.

If you enjoy designing control panels, working with PLC-driven systems, and contributing to large-scale automation projects, this is a strong opportunity to grow your impact.

What You’ll Do
  • In this role, you will design and develop electrical control systems that support automated crane and industrial handling solutions.
  • You’ll create detailed electrical schematics for PLCs, I/O systems, AC/DC drives, and power distribution, ensuring designs meet project specifications and industry standards. You will also develop I/O lists, panel layouts, and control system documentation used throughout the project lifecycle.
  • You’ll collaborate closely with internal teams, OEMs, and end users to ensure systems are designed accurately and delivered on time. This includes supporting commissioning activities, updating drawings to reflect real-world installations, and maintaining proper document control and revision tracking.
  • Additionally, you’ll contribute to improving engineering standards and tools, helping drive efficiency and consistency across projects.

What We’re Looking For
  • We’re looking for an Electrical Engineer with experience in industrial automation and control system design.
  • You should have a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering (or related field) and at least 2 years of experience designing electrical circuits or control panels for industrial systems.
  • A strong understanding of PLCs, field I/O, and control components is important, along with experience using AutoCAD or similar tools.
  • You should be comfortable working in a collaborative, project-based environment and communicating with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, or veteran status.
