Home Based Autonomous Vehicle information

What is a home based autonomous vehicle?

Home based autonomous vehicles are self-driving vehicles designed for personal or household use, often operating within residential areas or private properties. These vehicles use advanced sensors, cameras, and artificial intelligence to navigate and perform tasks without human intervention. Common applications include autonomous delivery robots, lawn mowers, and personal transportation pods. They aim to enhance convenience, safety, and efficiency in daily routines by automating transportation or chores at home.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a home based autonomous vehicle operator?

To thrive as a Home-Based Autonomous Vehicle Operator, you need a solid understanding of vehicle operation, remote monitoring technologies, and safety protocols, often supported by a valid driver's license and training in autonomous systems. Familiarity with teleoperation software, fleet management platforms, and real-time communication tools is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and clear communication help operators address unexpected situations and coordinate with support teams. These skills and qualifications are vital for ensuring the safety, efficiency, and reliability of autonomous vehicle operations from a remote setting.

What are some common challenges faced by remote engineers working on autonomous vehicle projects?

Remote engineers developing autonomous vehicle technology often encounter challenges related to collaboration and hardware access. Since much of the work involves real-world testing and integration with physical vehicles, coordinating with on-site teams and accessing specialized equipment can require careful planning and clear communication. Additionally, maintaining alignment on project goals and software versions across distributed teams is crucial, so strong organizational and documentation skills are highly valued. Leveraging virtual collaboration tools and regular video meetings helps bridge these gaps and ensures seamless progress.

What is the difference between Home Based Autonomous Vehicle vs Remote Autonomous Vehicle Technician?

AspectHome Based Autonomous VehicleRemote Autonomous Vehicle Technician
CredentialsEngineering degree, certifications in autonomous systemsTechnical certifications, experience with vehicle diagnostics
Work EnvironmentHome office, remote monitoring, software testingRemote diagnostics, virtual troubleshooting
Industry UsageDevelopment, testing, and deployment of autonomous vehiclesMaintenance, troubleshooting, and support of autonomous systems remotely

Both roles involve working with autonomous vehicle technology but differ in focus. Home Based Autonomous Vehicle roles primarily involve development and testing from a remote location, while Remote Autonomous Vehicle Technicians focus on troubleshooting and support remotely. Understanding these differences helps job seekers identify the right career path in the autonomous vehicle industry.

Job description

ABOUT ASI
At Autonomous Solutions, Inc. (ASI), our mission is to help you reach your potential through innovative robotic solutions. We develop autonomous systems that help organizations improve safety, productivity, and operational performance in demanding industries and environments. Our work is guided by our core values of Safe, Simple, Transparent, Growth, Humble, and Attention to Detail.
This is a project-based employee role supporting the development, deployment, and validation of ASI's autonomous vehicle platforms. Development phases of this nature typically continue through project completion, often spanning two to four years, although scope and duration are determined by business and customer needs.
JOB SUMMARY
The Field Tester II supports the operation, testing, deployment, and validation of ASI's autonomous vehicle platforms in real-world environments. This role executes structured test procedures, operates manual and autonomous equipment, collects system data, documents vehicle behavior, and helps engineering teams identify and reproduce issues discovered during testing.
As a Level II contributor, this position independently performs assigned testing activities and provides clear, detailed feedback regarding system performance and operational usability. The Field Tester II works closely with test engineers, software teams, equipment operators, and field operations personnel to verify that autonomous systems operate safely, reliably, and according to defined requirements.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Operate manual, remote-controlled, semi-autonomous, and autonomous vehicle platforms during field testing
  • Execute structured test plans, procedures, and operational scenarios to validate system functionality and performance
  • Complete vehicle inspections, system setup, calibration, configuration, and pre-test readiness checks
  • Monitor vehicle and autonomous system behavior during testing and identify unexpected performance or safety concerns
  • Document test conditions, procedures, results, failures, and observations accurately and consistently
  • Collect and organize system logs, photographs, videos, measurements, and other supporting test evidence
  • Reproduce reported issues and support engineers with troubleshooting and root cause investigation activities
  • Perform regression testing to verify software updates, corrective actions, and system improvements
  • Support the installation, inspection, and basic maintenance of sensors, computers, communication equipment, and autonomous system components
  • Provide operational feedback regarding system usability, workflow effectiveness, and vehicle performance
  • Assist with customer demonstrations, field deployments, acceptance testing, and operational readiness activities
  • Communicate testing progress, system issues, safety concerns, and equipment needs to appropriate team members
  • Maintain testing equipment, vehicles, tools, and work areas in an organized and operational condition
  • Follow all company, customer, and site-specific safety policies when working around vehicles, machinery, and autonomous systems
  • Support the development and improvement of field testing procedures, checklists, and documentation

ESSENTIAL EDUCATION, WORK EXPERIENCE, JOB SKILLS
  • Two to five years of experience in field testing, equipment operation, technical support, vehicle testing, military operations, or a related hands-on technical role
  • Experience operating heavy equipment, industrial vehicles, construction equipment, agricultural equipment, robotics platforms, or similar machinery
  • Ability to safely operate equipment while following structured procedures and test instructions
  • Experience identifying, documenting, and communicating mechanical, electrical, software, or operational issues
  • Basic understanding of mechanical, electrical, computer, or vehicle systems
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to produce accurate testing documentation
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills in field environments
  • Comfortable using computers, tablets, diagnostic applications, and technical software
  • Ability to communicate clearly with engineers, operators, customers, and cross-functional team members
  • Ability to work independently while remaining responsive to changing test priorities
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather, terrain, noise, dust, and operating conditions
  • Ability to travel frequently and work nonstandard hours when required by testing or deployment schedules
  • Valid driver's license with the ability to meet company vehicle-operation requirements

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience testing autonomous vehicles, robotics systems, automated machinery, or advanced driver-assistance systems
  • Experience operating construction, mining, agricultural, material-handling, or off-road equipment
  • Familiarity with GPS/GNSS, LiDAR, radar, cameras, vehicle sensors, or communication systems
  • Experience using Linux-based systems, command-line tools, or diagnostic software
  • Familiarity with CAN communication, vehicle control systems, or embedded computing platforms
  • Experience supporting prototype development, engineering validation, or customer acceptance testing
  • Commercial driver's license or recognized heavy-equipment operating certifications
  • Experience working directly with customers during demonstrations, deployments, or operational testing
