Job description

Who is a Hockey Broadcast Technician at SMT?

Are you a hockey fan? Do you have experience working in a broadcast environment or hands-on experience troubleshooting technology? If you answered yes, here’s your chance to "break away” with SMT as a Hockey Broadcast Technician. Broadcast technicians get the opportunity to work with SMT’s award-winning and globally recognized Player and Puck tracking technology for the New Jersey Devils.

This opportunity requires an exceptional attention span to simultaneously monitor computer applications, follow the events of the game without becoming distracted and effectively communicate with other team members and our clients. This position requires reporting to the Prudential Center and candidates must be able to meet this requirement to be considered for the opportunity.

This is a seasonal position, with an hourly rate of $25-$30 based on experience. We are hiring for the 2026-27 season, and the interviews will begin in August.

What is Your Daily Impact at SMT?

As a Hockey Broadcast Technician, you will report to the arena six hours before puck drop to begin prep for your game. Game shifts are typically 8-10 hours based on the length of the game. You will collaborate with our remote studio staff in Durham, NC, fellow on-site SMT teammates and our broadcast partners to ensure our technology is skating at full speed and ready to take the ice.

Additional responsibilities include:

  • Verify all tracking system components are in working order
  • Work directly with broadcast mobile unit engineers to confirm video and communication feeds
  • Create and continue an open communication platform with NHL and Network personnel
  • Communications with NHL & SMT staff onsite and in Durham for pre-game verification of Player and Puck Tracking deliverables
  • Operation of the tracking system during games
  • Perform system maintenance, when necessary
  • Troubleshoot system components – computers, cameras, cables, and networks
  • Relay system issues to support staff for repair or replacement

What Do You Bring to SMT?

  • TV broadcast and/or live event production experience
  • Knowledge of computer hardware, software, and Windows OS
  • Open availability (must be available to work daytime, night, weekend, and holiday games)
  • Extensive PC gaming skills (use of hotkeys and gaming mice)
  • Basic understanding of hockey terminology, NHL rules and game play
  • A customer service and collaborative mentality
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Strong verbal communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to:
    1. Quickly process feedback from the system and adjust in real time
    2. Work well under pressure and complete tasks on time
    3. Follow daily checklists and other written procedures

What Can SMT Offer You?

Our broadcast technicians start at $25-30/hour and provide flexible scheduling (based on the Devils schedule). It is not required to work every single home game; however, we are seeking individuals who can work 30+ home games as needed.

You will get to work in a highly collaborative and supportive environment, and as we continue to expand and support other sports, high performing technicians may be given the chance to work with different sports broadcasts and technology at SMT
