What is an HIV nurse practitioner?

A HIV Nurse Practitioner (HIV NP) is an advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) who specializes in the care and management of patients living with HIV. They provide comprehensive healthcare services, including diagnosing and treating HIV-related conditions, prescribing medications such as antiretroviral therapy (ART), and offering education and counseling. HIV NPs also collaborate with other healthcare professionals to ensure holistic patient care. Their role extends to promoting prevention strategies, supporting adherence to treatment, and addressing stigma associated with HIV.

What does an HIV nurse practitioner do?

A typical day for an HIV Nurse Practitioner involves conducting patient assessments, managing antiretroviral therapy, educating patients about medication adherence, and coordinating care with physicians, social workers, and case managers. You may also perform routine lab monitoring, address co-occurring health conditions, and provide counseling for risk reduction and mental health support. Many HIV Nurse Practitioners split their time between direct patient care in clinics or hospitals and collaborating on treatment plans with interdisciplinary teams. Your day may also include participating in outreach or educational programs, keeping you at the forefront of patient-centered HIV care.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an HIV nurse practitioner?

To thrive as an HIV Nurse Practitioner, you need advanced clinical expertise in HIV care, a nurse practitioner degree, and national certification as an NP, often with specialized training in infectious diseases or HIV/AIDS management. Compassion, cultural sensitivity, and strong communication skills enable effective patient education and coordination with multidisciplinary healthcare teams.
