What jobs can a 14-year-old legally do?

A 14-year-old can legally work in a variety of jobs, such as babysitting, delivering newspapers, working in retail stores, serving as a busser or host in restaurants, and doing yard work or other non-hazardous tasks. However, there are federal and state labor laws that limit the types of jobs and the number of hours 14-year-olds can work. For example, they cannot work in hazardous occupations or during school hours, and there are restrictions on evening and weekend hours during the school year. It's important to check your state's specific laws for any additional requirements or permits needed for young workers.

What types of entry-level tasks are typically assigned to 14-year-olds, and how do these responsibilities help build valuable skills?

At age 14, entry-level jobs often include responsibilities such as greeting customers, stocking shelves, cleaning work areas, or assisting with simple food preparation. These tasks are designed to be safe and manageable for younger workers, while also helping them develop important skills like communication, time management, and teamwork. By starting with these foundational duties, 14-year-olds gain practical experience and work habits that will benefit them in future roles as they grow older and take on more complex responsibilities.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a 14-year-old in entry-level jobs, and why are they important?

To thrive in entry-level jobs at age 14, you need basic reliability, a willingness to learn, and compliance with legal work requirements such as a work permit. Familiarity with tools like point-of-sale systems or basic cleaning equipment may be required depending on the job. Strong communication, time management, and a positive attitude help young workers stand out to employers. These skills and qualities are important because they build trust with supervisors and lay the foundation for future workplace success.
