What are some typical challenges faced by a Hil Sil Test Engineer when integrating new automotive systems for testing?

Hil Sil Test Engineers often encounter challenges when integrating new automotive systems, such as ensuring accurate simulation of real-world scenarios and managing complex hardware-software interactions. Adapting test setups to accommodate rapidly evolving vehicle technologies can require continuous learning and troubleshooting. Collaboration with cross-functional teams, including design, software, and validation engineers, is essential to address integration issues and optimize test coverage. Successfully overcoming these challenges helps ensure the reliability and safety of automotive systems before deployment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a HIL SIL Test Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a HIL SIL Test Engineer, you need a strong background in control systems, embedded software testing, and a relevant engineering degree such as electrical, electronics, or computer engineering. Familiarity with Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) and Software-in-the-Loop (SIL) simulation tools like dSPACE, NI VeriStand, MATLAB/Simulink, and knowledge of test automation frameworks is typically required. Critical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication are essential soft skills for diagnosing issues and collaborating with development teams. These skills and qualifications are crucial for ensuring the reliability and safety of complex embedded systems in industries such as automotive and aerospace.

What is a HIL SIL Test Engineer?

A HIL (Hardware-in-the-Loop) SIL (Software-in-the-Loop) Test Engineer is a professional who specializes in validating and verifying embedded systems by simulating real-world environments. They use HIL and SIL testing techniques to evaluate how software and hardware components interact within a system, often in the automotive, aerospace, or industrial sectors. These engineers design test cases, develop simulation models, and analyze results to ensure system reliability and safety before physical deployment. Their work helps identify and resolve issues early in the development cycle, reducing costs and risks.

Job description

AST SpaceMobile is building the first and only global cellular broadband network in space to operate directly with standard, unmodified mobile devices based on our extensive IP and patent portfolio and designed for both commercial and government applications. Our engineers and space scientists are on a mission to eliminate the connectivity gaps faced by today's five billion mobile subscribers and finally bring broadband to the billions who remain unconnected.

Position Overview

We are seeking an Electrical Software Test Engineer to join our Software Validation and Testing Team. In this role, you will support component level and spacecraft level testing, working across multiple AST engineering divisions. You will collaborate closely with software developers and internal engineering teams to assist in the development, testing, and deployment of vehicle software using hardware in the loop (HIL) and software in the loop (SIL) testing techniques. This is an excellent opportunity for an engineer passionate about electrical systems, testing, and spacecraft operations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Execute tests on component level and spacecraft level platforms.
  • Document test results, including post processing data and generating test reports.
  • Support investigations of test failures, anomalies, and root cause analysis.
  • Assist in developing test plans, procedures, and documentation.
  • Serve as the onsite electrical engineering representative during testing activities.
  • Ensure safe and effective use of Electrical Ground Support Equipment (EGSE).
  • Track project deliverables and support test team coordination.
  • Provide technical guidance and uphold industry best practices.
  • Collaborate with systems, electrical, and software engineers to support integrated operations and resolve issues.
