Job description

DPW HIGHWAY LABORER - FULL TIME

The Town of Belchertown is accepting applications for a full-time, 40 hours per week, Highway Laborer to perform manual work assisting in the construction, maintenance and repair projects of the Highway operations; all other related work as required.

Major duties include: Performs manual tasks in connection with the maintenance, care, upkeep, repair, marking, and beautification of highways, streets, parking lots, and other town property.

Tasks may include cutting grass; applying pavement markings and paint; raking, dumping, spreading, grading, and rolling of asphalt, gravel, stone, and any other material; cleaning, repair and installation of culverts, catch basins, drains, and ditches; patching, paving and repair of highways, streets, parking lots, sidewalks, etc; and general cleaning of roads and streets. Repairs and replaces signs. Sweeps sidewalks and roads, rakes and mows lawns; picks up and hauls debris and rubbish; shovels snow. Plows snow with a light truck.

Works and assists mechanics in servicing automotive equipment as needed. Assists other town departments; installs water lines; assists in construction/maintenance projects within the wastewater treatment plant. Regular attendance and punctuality at the workplace is required.

Minimum qualifications: High school education and one year of experience in a related field; or any equivalent combination of education and experience. Basic knowledge of the materials, methods, and equipment relative to road construction and maintenance. Ability to follow written and oral instructions and to adhere to safety precautions. Ability to read and interpret blueprints. Regularly lifts and/or moves objects weighing up to 150 pounds, such as tools, equipment, supplies, etc. Must be able to operate equipment/trucks for extended periods during snow emergencies.

This is a Grade 3 IUOE Local 98 union position with a salary range of $19.27-$25.31/hour.
