Job Title: Exceptional Student Education (ESE) Teacher Consultant
Location: Various Locations
Salary: DFT Salary Schedule ($55,000 - $94,000)
Reports to: Exceptional Student Education Administrator
Bargaining Unit: DFT
Benefits Eligible: Yes
Telecommuting Eligibility: Not eligible for telecommuting
In accordance with the Detroit Federation of Teachers (DFT) and the Board of Education of the School District of the City of Detroit, the following vacancy is announced.
Position Summary:
Responsible for providing supportive services and staff development to general education and special education teachers, administrators and parents/guardians on behalf of students who qualify for special education services.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Valid Michigan Teaching Certificate with a minimum of one special education endorsement
  • Ability to meet Michigan Department of Education requirements for approval as a teacher consultant
  • Minimum of five (5) years of successful teaching experience, three (3) of which must be in special education
  • Training and experience with assessing and observing students with the stated disability listed above.
  • Working knowledge of the development & implementation of Individualized Educational Plans (IEP's) and Individualized Family Service Plans (IFSPs); Non-Public Service Plans (NSPs)

Essential Functions:
  • Assist instructional staff through conferences, consultations, observations, and demonstrations with classroom organization and the implementation and evaluation of IEPs, instructional strategies and materials.
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate individualized education programs.
  • Offer support/consultation to teachers and administrators as needed relating to special education guidelines and regulations / teaching strategies.
  • Maintain positive, cooperative, and mutually supportive relationships with the administration, instructional staff, students, parents and representatives of other school districts and agencies within the community, as well as demonstrate the highest ethical and professional behavior with same.
  • Assist with group testing programs for measuring the aptitudes, achievement, and interests of students and assist the instructional staff in interpretation of the findings so that programs are developed or modified to meet the needs of students.
  • Conduct or provide staff development sessions and educational programs for parents to promote an understanding of learning concepts and to increase competency in dealing with problems in learning, behavior, and adjustment.
  • Maintain and complete in a timely fashion, all records and reports as required by law and regulation or requested by supervisors.
  • Assist teachers in selecting instruments for assessing learner needs.
  • Provide follow-up for teachers who have participated in professional development activities to assure skills are implemented in the classroom.
  • Analyze student performance data and make recommendations for remediation and enrichment.
  • Coach teams about evidence-based practices and strategies appropriate to support students with disabilities.
  • Assist teachers with designing special education programs¿in the Least Restrictive Environment through consultation with general and special education teachers.
  • Assist in the development and maintenance of departmental reports as required.
  • Transport materials and equipment to and from site locations.
  • Coordinates and facilitates team meetings to coach teams through data collection, data analysis and student support plan development using a problem-solving process.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor.
