What types of projects or tasks are high school computer science interns typically assigned during their internship?

High school computer science interns usually work on introductory coding assignments, assist in software testing, and take part in team meetings to gain exposure to real-world development workflows. Depending on the organization, they might help with data entry, debugging, or creating simple web pages or scripts under the guidance of a mentor. These tasks are designed to build foundational skills and offer insights into collaborative software development, while ensuring that interns can contribute meaningfully regardless of their prior experience.

What is a high school computer science internship?

High school computer science internships are short-term opportunities for students to gain hands-on experience in the field of computer science. These internships allow high school students to work with professionals, learn about different areas like coding, software development, and IT, and build foundational skills for future studies or careers. Internships can take place at tech companies, research labs, universities, or even virtually, and often provide mentorship, real-world projects, and networking opportunities. Participating in an internship can help students explore their interests, enhance their college applications, and develop valuable technical and soft skills.

Job description

About St. Markโ€™s

Founded in 1906, St. Mark's School of Texas is a non-sectarian, college-preparatory, independent day school for boys in grades one through twelve. The Schoolโ€™s charter states that it is โ€œdesigned to afford its students well-rounded physical, intellectual, moral, and religious training and instruction.โ€ The School is intended to be a diverse community of teachers and students who share a love of learning and who strive for high achievement in whatever they undertake.

St. Markโ€™s aims to prepare young men to assume leadership and responsibility in a competitive and changing world. To this end, the School professes and upholds certain values. These values include the discipline of postponing immediate gratification in the interest of earning eventual, hard-won satisfaction; the responsibility of defending oneโ€™s own ideas, of respecting the views of others, and of accepting the consequences for oneโ€™s own actions; and an appreciation for the lively connection between knowledge and responsibility and the obligation to serve.

Position Description

St. Markโ€™s School of Texas seeks a dynamic and innovative educator to teach computer science in the Middle School. ย The holder of this position will collaborate with the Makerspace Director and Computer Science faculty to deliver Computer Science instruction in the state-of-the-art Winn Science Center.ย  The principal responsibility will be teaching classes in computer science with additional roles that include sponsoring STEM teams and clubs such as the Lego / Robotics teams, working with students and teachers on special design projects, serving as an Advisor to a small group of students, and participating in co-curricular programs such as the Wilderness Program or athletics.ย  Candidates should have a bachelorโ€™s degree or higher in a related field โ€“ engineering or computer science โ€“ and have taught these subjects at the Middle or Upper School levels or possess applicable professional experience.ย

St. Markโ€™s students are eager and motivated learners, and the computer science courses are based upon frequent and challenging project-based learning experiences that promote student collaboration and communication.ย  A strong candidate should be a content expert who is able to teach with an engaging classroom style, collaborate with colleagues to develop innovative lessons, and appeal to the learning styles of a diverse and extremely talented group of boys.ย  He or she should have a desire to participate enthusiastically in the various activities that occur outside of the lab in a vibrant independent school community.ย  Likewise, he or she should demonstrate a commitment to character and leadership education for all boys, giving equal priority to their character and intellectual development.

Responsibilities

  • Teach four or more sections of computer science in the Middle School
  • Sponsor extracurricular activities in the Middle and/or Upper School
  • Serve as an Advisor to a small group of boys
  • Contribute to the broader community by participating in the wilderness program, club program, or athletic program, depending on experience
  • Participate in the character and leadership education program
  • A bachelorโ€™s degree or higher in computer science
  • Five or more years teaching computer science at the upper or advanced middle school level; independent school experience is a plus.ย  Relevant professional experience in industry may supplement or replace this qualification
  • Proficiency and experience with both block-based and text-based programming languages (Python preferred), and the ability to develop curriculum and align lesson plans with topics relevant to current Computer Science standards
  • Strong computational thinking and problem-solving skills
  • Passion for subject matter and for working with young people
  • Enthusiastic and collaborative approach to working with colleagues
