Description:

Position Purpose and Summary: The teller is considered by many as the “face of the bank” due to the extensive amount of contact with customers and others in the public. Therefore, a teller’s key role is to provide superior and quality customer service while accurately handling a variety of monetary transactions. Regular contact with other bank department personnel is also required, thus making team work among all bank employees a necessity. Under general supervision and in accordance with established policies and procedures, a number of duties may be asked of the bank teller.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide the highest level of service to customers and associates.
  • Greet every customer with a warm welcome and a smile.
  • Accept checks, cash, and other forms of deposit or payment from customers
  • Post all transactions electronically at their terminal throughout their shift
  • Answer questions from customers about their accounts
  • Prepare specialized types of funds, such as cashier’s checks, prepaid access cards, etc.
  • Process change orders for business customers
  • Verify customer’s identity when necessary
  • Count the cash in their drawer at the end of their shift and make sure the amounts balance
  • Record and post night drop deposits and mail in deposit transactions
  • Promote bank products or services
  • Refer customers to appropriate bank personnel for products or services not offered at teller station
  • Keep terminal area/window secure and clean at all times
  • Report any discrepancies or suspicious activity
  • Involvement in community service and/or civic organizations.

Duties may also include:

  • Verifying monies received from Fed
  • Canceling bank mail through postage machine
  • Keeping coin counter and other machinery clean
  • Verify account maintenance changes
  • Help answer incoming telephone calls when not assisting customers
  • Other duties as assigned

  • Ability to read and interpret policies, procedures, memorandums, etc.
  • Ability to present oneself in an appropriately clean professional dress and manner
  • Provide courteous, knowledgeable and professional customer service both in person and on the phone
  • Assume responsibility, display initiative, and exercise good judgment
  • Display an ability to remain attentive and discreet
  • Ability to work cooperatively with others as part of a formal or informal team to accomplish Bank goals; to respect the needs, ideas, and contributions of others

Working Conditions and Hours:

Typically, several tellers will be seated within close vicinity of each other, calling for a great deal of cooperation, respect and discretion on the part of each teller in the department. Most seem to enjoy this closeness and become good friends and helpers to each other. Tellers have a window or area to work at and are assigned their own cash drawer which no other teller handles. This ensures that each teller can manage his or her transactions for the day, and at the end of the day, each teller counts out the drawer to ensure that it matches the transaction records. Tellers work approximately 6-8 hours a day Monday-Friday, averaging 40 hours per week Rotational work on Saturdays, 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. is included in the job duties and days are scheduled well in advance for preparation and convenience. This is a non-exempt position.
