As part of HVAC Cooling, SPX Cooling Technologies is a leader in high quality industrial HVAC equipment used to cool large facilities like hospitals, data centers, and power plants. How you will make an Impact (Job Summary)
SPX is a diverse team of unique individuals who all make an impact. As a Senior Engineer I, you will be providing structural engineering for complex cooling tower projects across various product lines and materials. Responsibilities include coordinating teams internally and externally to design cost-effective new products, directing the work of engineers and drafters, ensuring integrity and compliance with codes and standards. Additionally, tasks involve performing tests, technical bid evaluations, expediting vendor processes, and developing project plans. Success in this position requires extensive engineering experience, strong technical and communication skills, and the ability to work independently on complex technical challenges.
This role encourages innovation and continuously improves efficiency of technical support, monitors advances of technology and competition, and supports global and acquisition-related technical issues in areas of expertise.
What you can expect in this role (Job Responsibilities)
While each day brings new opportunities at SPX, your core responsibilities will be:
  1. Project Management
  • Manage projects and schedule tasks.
  • Execute project-specific document control.
  • Review, approve, and control vendor-supplied engineering documents.
  • Provide support to site erection and commissioning teams.

  1. Technical Leadership
  • Delegates work to drafters and other engineers.
  • Serve as a technical consultant to sales and construction teams, both internally and in the field, as well as customers.
  • Train new engineering employees and assist internal sales team.
  • Develop new designs and solutions to problems.

  1. Documentation and Compliance
  • Develop project-specific operating and maintenance manuals.
  • Write engineering specifications for tower lines and components.
  • For contractual purposes, verify and provide proof of job completion and meeting specification requirements.
  • Sign and approve drawings for new and project specific designs and for drawings that are product standards.

  1. Testing and Support
  • Troubleshoot, repair, and improve production equipment.
  • Conduct product testing during development and post-installation to verify software and data development.
  • Witness third-party contractual tests.
  • Provide pricing information for new quotes.

  • Experience with SAP ERP Systems
  • Experience in AutoCAD, MatchCAD, RISA2D, and RISA3D
  • Experience in Solid Edge
  • Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint required.
  • Experience working with teams in different physical locations.
  • Knowledge of national building codes.
  • Basic understanding of design and application of components for cooling towers.
  • Knowledge of and ability to apply the fundamental concepts, practices, and procedures of cooling tower design and structural engineering.
  • Broad knowledge and application of principles, practices, and procedures of cooling tower design and structural engineering to the completion of difficult assignments.
  • Expert source of product knowledge in specified area.
  • Highly creative.
  • Strong ability to visualize complex spatial geometry.
  • Passionate about product development.
  • Persistent and patient enough to work on projects for which results are not seen for long periods of time.

Education & Certifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Structural Engineering
  • Master's degree in Engineering, preferred
  • Has met all the educational requirements and standards to be certified as an EIT (Engineer in Training) after passing the FE exam
  • EIT/FE and PE preferred, but must meet requirements to sit for EIT exam at minimum
  • Must pass the EIT/FE exam within 2 years of BS degree or hire date, whichever is later
  • Must pass the PE exam within 6 years of BS degree or hire date, whichever is later

Travel & Working Environment
  • Onsite office environment, Monday - Friday; Hybrid work schedule available after satisfactory completion of probationary period.
  • Willingness to travel at least 20% of the time.
  • The position may require working occasionally outside normal work hours.
  • Keyboarding/typing.
  • Ability to read effectively from a computer screen and/or a paper copy.
  • Ability to handle a large volume of work and perform multiples tasks in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally.
