What is high autonomy?

A High Autonomy job is a role where employees have significant independence in making decisions, managing tasks, and organizing their work. These roles typically require self-motivation, problem-solving skills, and the ability to prioritize responsibilities without constant supervision. High Autonomy jobs are common in fields like remote work, research, consulting, and leadership positions. They often provide flexibility in work hours and methods, allowing individuals to optimize productivity and efficiency. However, they also require accountability and strong time-management skills to ensure goals are met effectively.

What does high autonomy mean in a job context?

High autonomy in a job context refers to a work environment where employees have significant independence and control over how they perform their tasks. It means workers can make decisions about their schedules, methods, and priorities with minimal supervision. This type of job often encourages creativity, problem-solving, and personal responsibility, leading to higher job satisfaction and motivation. High autonomy roles are commonly found in creative, research, and leadership positions, but can be present in various industries.

How does a high-autonomy role typically structure collaboration and communication with the rest of the team?

In high-autonomy roles, professionals are trusted to take initiative and manage their own tasks, but effective collaboration and communication remain essential. Team members often use asynchronous tools like project management software, shared documents, and regular check-ins to stay aligned without micromanagement. While you may have significant independence in decision-making and time management, you’ll also participate in team meetings or stand-ups to share progress and coordinate on shared goals. This structure encourages both personal responsibility and open communication, fostering a supportive yet flexible work environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in a high-autonomy role, and why are they important?

To thrive in a high-autonomy role, you need strong self-management skills, subject matter expertise, and the ability to independently set and achieve goals, typically supported by relevant education or experience in the field. Familiarity with project management tools, collaboration platforms, and time-tracking software is often necessary for remote coordination and task organization. Exceptional communication, proactive problem-solving, and accountability are vital soft skills that help individuals excel when working with minimal supervision. These abilities are important because they ensure productivity, maintain high standards, and drive results in environments that demand independent decision-making.

Job description

Interested in joining one of Canada's top-performing asset managers? We're hiring an AI Product Owner in our AI Solutions engineering team. You are the engagement lead for affiliate and FG stakeholders into the solutions team, owning intake, prioritization, and the translation of business demand into signed-off, build-ready work. You protect engineering capacity by driving scope discipline, defining clear success measures, and ensuring the team builds the right things, safely and responsibly, in a regulated financial services environment. We operate on a hybrid model with three days a week in-office to facilitate team collaboration.
What You Will Do

  • Own affiliate and FG stakeholder relationships, be the primary point of contact for AI requests, status, and decision-making
  • Run the intake and prioritization operating rhythm with the Technical Lead. Triage requests, maintain the pipeline, and make trade-offs explicit (now / next / later)
  • Lead discovery and use-case shaping, facilitate sessions to define the problem, map workflows, identify constraints, and set measurable success criteria
  • Own the specification "contract", ensure every use case entering build has a complete, approved spec (inputs, outputs, acceptance criteria, risks/assumptions, and data access requirements)
  • Own the feedback-to-scope loop through UAT, translate stakeholder feedback into precise spec changes, control scope creep, and drive timely sign-off
  • Maintain portfolio visibility, track progress, dependencies, blockers, satisfaction, and pipeline health; provide clear reporting to stakeholders and AI leadership
  • Directly manage a future FG Business Analyst, set priorities, review specs, and ensure consistent quality and stakeholder experience across engagements

What You Bring

  • Product Owner / Product Manager / Senior Business Analyst experience owning a delivery pipeline from discovery through release (not just requirements gathering)
  • Proven ability to work directly with senior stakeholders (portfolio managers, investment leaders, executives), set expectations, drive decisions, and hold the line on scope
  • Exceptional specification writing, produce clear, testable requirements and acceptance criteria that engineering can build from without repeated clarification
  • Experience in financial services or another regulated environment, with an understanding of risk, controls, privacy, and stakeholder accountability
  • Technical fluency, able to challenge assumptions, understand architectural implications, and partner effectively with AI technical leads (without needing to be an engineer)
  • High autonomy and strong judgment, turn ambiguous requests into structured, prioritized work with clear outcomes and constraints
  • Constructive assertiveness and strong written communication, protect scope and timelines while maintaining trusted relationships

The salary range for this position is $130,000 - $150,000. The salary range provided reflects the base salary range for this position as required by legislation. In addition, there is an annual performance bonus which contributes to the total compensation for this position. Further questions may be directed to the HR team during the interview process.
