What is a Heroku Developer?

A Heroku Developer is a software engineer or web developer who specializes in building, deploying, and managing applications on the Heroku cloud platform. They have expertise in configuring Heroku environments, utilizing its deployment workflows, and integrating add-ons for databases, monitoring, and other services. Heroku Developers often work with languages and frameworks supported by Heroku, such as Node.js, Ruby, Python, or Java. Their role involves optimizing applications for scalability and reliability while leveraging Heroku’s platform-as-a-service features to simplify infrastructure management.

What is Heroku developer?

A Heroku developer is a software professional who specializes in building, deploying, and maintaining applications on the Heroku platform, a cloud-based platform-as-a-service (PaaS). They typically work with programming languages like Ruby, Node.js, or Python and use tools such as Git for version control and Heroku CLI for deployment. Strong knowledge of cloud services, application scaling, and continuous integration is essential for this role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Heroku Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Heroku Developer, you need strong programming skills (commonly in languages like JavaScript, Ruby, or Python), experience with cloud application deployment, and a solid understanding of web development concepts. Familiarity with the Heroku platform, Git version control, add-ons, and continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD) tools is typically required, along with relevant certifications such as Heroku or cloud platform credentials. Excellent problem-solving abilities, adaptability, and clear communication skills help developers collaborate with teams and address deployment challenges efficiently. These combined skills and qualities are crucial for building, deploying, and maintaining reliable, scalable applications in a fast-paced, cloud-based environment.

What is the salary of Heroku developer?

A Heroku developer's salary typically ranges from $70,000 to $130,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and skill level. Developers skilled in cloud platforms, deployment, and automation tend to earn higher salaries.

What are some common challenges Heroku Developers face when deploying and scaling applications?

Heroku Developers often encounter challenges related to optimizing application performance and managing costs as projects grow. Ensuring smooth deployments, handling environment variables, and configuring add-ons for databases, caching, or logging can be complex, especially in larger teams. Additionally, scaling applications horizontally on Heroku requires a good understanding of dyno management and how resource limits might affect reliability. Collaborating with developers, DevOps, and product managers is essential to streamline workflows and address these challenges effectively.

Job description

The Heroku Web Apps team is dedicated to beautiful, usable, and valuable web apps. We're highly collaborative, make decisions in minutes, and ship features in hours. We believe in getting customer validation early, verifying with real data, but also running with our gut. The small team includes UI/UX design and product management, but everyone on the team is responsible for the success of our products, including that we're building the right thing in the first place, and that it's polished and beautiful when it's done.
We're seeking a developer with a passion for UI/UX, great HTML/CSS/Javascript skills and that can own the entire stack of a Ruby on Rails app, including ongoing operations and maintenance. The ideal profile combines deep experience in full-stack web development with a strong computer science background. You must be able to demonstrate prior experience on web sites you're proud to show off for their polished UI, appropriate use of Javascript, and optimized backends.
You should be passionate about:
  • User experience and goal-directed design
  • Current Rails/jQuery best practices
  • Style, presentation, and design

You should be very strong on all of the following:
  • HTML/CSS - not a web designer, but extremely good at implementing markup
  • Javascript - including jQuery and cross-browser compatibility
  • Ruby on Rails
  • Performance optimization, SQL tuning, caching strategies
  • Ability to own projects end-to-end

Bonus skills:
  • Async (e.g. Backbone.js, EventMachine, Node.js)
  • HTML5 fanciness (e.g. websockets, canvas)
  • Test Driven Development (TDD)
  • Amazon Web Services (AWS e.g. S3, EC2)
  • Having founded your own startup

Attach a resume, but also include something about yourself in your message. Tell us why you love the product, why you want to work at Heroku, why you want this job, and why you're qualified. Use the resume to back yourself up.
UI samples (or URLs) should be included.
This position does require that you live in, or be willing to relocate to, San Francisco and that you're already legally able to work in the US - H1B quotas don't open up again until April. If you're Canadian or Australian with a 4 year degree, we might be able to do something.
