Production Design Manager

Job Summary:
Responsible for supporting the development of the ASC production engineering package and transferring that package from Helsinki to Gulf Copper. This role ensures that all production design data (including models, drawings, and schematics) are optimized for manufacturing, safe for intended use, and meet all client requirements (if applicable).
Key Responsibilities
This position is responsible for the following: Other duties may be assigned.
  • Infrastructure: Support the development and requirements and implementation of production engineering tools for Gulf Copper, drawing heavily from those used in Helsinki shipyard.
  • Team Leadership: Establish a production design team capable of learning/doing with the Helsinki design team during basic and detailed design of vessel 1 and then transferring the design back to Texas.
  • Design-to-Production Optimization: Review and approve 3D modular designs, 2D drawings, structural assembly, piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs), and electrical schematics to ensure manufacturability and compliance with industry standards (e.g., GD&T, ASME, ISO).
  • Production Design Management: Support development of MPPS-100 design, traveling often and participating via teams with the Helsinki design team during the basic and detail design phase. Ensure the design can be produced efficiently in the Helsinki Shipyard and at Gulf Copper's Facilities in Texas. Oversee the development of technical design packages for production, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and on-time delivery to the production line.
  • Engineering Change Process (ECP): Support the Engineering Change Order (ECO) process, ensuring design changes, upgrades, and revisions are properly approved, implemented and communicated to production. Lead any activities necessary to transfer the design to Texas for the production of the 3rd vessel (1st in the US).
  • Resource & Budget Planning: Estimate labor, capacity, and technical resources to meet production design schedules and budget commitments.
  • Continuous Improvement: Identify deficiencies in design processes, implement Lean techniques (Six Sigma) to eliminate waste, and improve drawing quality. Capturing improvements and lessons learned by the production team in Helsinki prior to start of fabrication in Texas for like assemblies is essential.
  • Cross-Functional Liaison: Act as the technical liaison between Sales, Project Management, Engineering, ILS and Production teams to troubleshoot issues and ensure client requirements are accurately translated into designs. Provide status updates to executive leaderships.

Required Qualifications
  • Experience: 20+ years of ship production design & engineering experience, with at least 10+ years in a supervisory or management role, preferably in or supporting a manufacturing environment.
  • Technical Skills: Deep proficiency in 3D CAD software (e.g., Ship constructor, AVEVA, SolidWorks, NX, Autodesk Inventor, other ship production design software) and 2D documentation (AutoCAD).
  • Industry Knowledge: In-depth knowledge of DFM (Design for Manufacturability), DFMEA (Design Failure Mode and Effects Analysis), and GD&T.
  • Leadership: Proven ability to manage teams, delegate tasks, and mentor junior engineers.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with PLC (Product Lifecycle Management) systems and ERP systems.
  • Project Management Experience & Training
