POSITION SUMMARY
The Shipyard Helper supports machinists, mechanics, and supervisors by performing general labor, housekeeping, material handling, tool support, and equipment preparation. This position assists with repairs, overhauls, fabrication, and installation of mechanical equipment both inside the machine shop and in the field aboard vessels while maintaining a safe and productive work environment.
ESSENTAIL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Machine Shop Duties
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area.
  • Sweep floors, remove chips, shavings, and scrap metal from machines.
  • Clean lathes, mills, drill presses, saws, grinders, and other shop equipment.
  • Assist machinists with setup and teardown of machining jobs.
  • Stage raw materials, stock, and fabricated components.
  • Deburr machined parts using hand tools and power tools.
  • Measure and identify materials for machining operations.
  • Operate band saws, drill presses, and other approved equipment after training.
  • Change cutting fluids and assist with coolant maintenance.
  • Maintain inventory of tooling, inserts, abrasives, and consumables.
  • Deliver completed parts to production areas.

Mechanic Shop Duties
  • Assist mechanics with removal and installation of pumps, valves, motors, gearboxes, bearings, piping, and machinery.
  • Gather and return tools, equipment, and materials.
  • Clean mechanical components before inspection or repair.
  • Remove old gaskets, paint, corrosion, and debris from equipment.
  • Assist with lifting, rigging, and positioning equipment under supervision.
  • Install temporary coverings and protect equipment from contamination.
  • Assist with lubrication and preventive maintenance tasks.
  • Support hydrostatic testing and flushing operations.
  • Handle waste materials in accordance with environmental requirements.

General Shop Support
  • Move materials using pallet jacks, forklifts, or overhead cranes (if qualified).
  • Load and unload trucks and delivery vehicles.
  • Maintain tool rooms and storage areas.
  • Dispose of scrap metal and waste properly.
  • Assist with staging work packages and job materials.
  • Transport tools and equipment throughout the shipyard.
  • Support inventory counts and material organization.
  • Set up work areas, barricades, lighting, ventilation, and housekeeping stations.

Safety Responsibilities
  • Follow all company safety rules and procedures.
  • Properly wear required personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Participate in daily safety meetings and toolbox talks.
  • Identify and report unsafe conditions immediately.
  • Follow lockout/tagout procedures as directed.
  • Maintain good housekeeping to reduce slip, trip, and fire hazards.
  • Operate equipment only when trained and authorized.

QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds regularly.
  • Ability to climb ladders, work in confined spaces, and work aboard vessels.
  • Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Basic mechanical aptitude and willingness to learn.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Reliable attendance and strong work ethic.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous shipyard, industrial, construction, or manufacturing experience.
  • Forklift and overhead crane certification.
  • Experience using basic hand and power tools.
  • Familiarity with shipyard safety practices.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
  • Frequent standing, walking, bending, kneeling, crouching, climbing, and lifting.
  • Ability to work extended shifts, overtime, weekends, and onboard vessels as required.
  • Ability to safely perform work in noisy, dusty, and industrial environments.
