Material Handler

The Material Handler is responsible for safely and efficiently moving, storing, and tracking materials to ensure continuous production flow and accurate inventory control. This position supports multiple departments by supplying materials, assisting with receiving and shipping activities, and maintaining a clean and organized work environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Maintain a normal work pace while following all safety guidelines, including the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Exercise good judgement and make sound decisions when unexpected conditions arise
  • Review daily schedules for incoming and outgoing orders to prioritize workload
  • Obtain all necessary materials, tools, and equipment required to perform assigned tasks
  • Complete an equipment inspection report prior to operating any powered equipment
  • Verify that all equipment is safe for use before operating. If repairs are needed, follow proper lockout/tagout procedures, notify the supervisor and maintenance, and ensure a maintenance work order is completed.
  • Create and apply accurate inventory labels to pallets or cases as required
  • Supply materials to production areas as needed
  • Assist with receiving operations when required
  • Wrap, stage, and load items for transfer trucks in an organized and timely manner
  • Place extruded materials into designated blue racks
  • Assist ALL departments with material movement as needed
  • Keep the work area clean and organized in compliance with 5S and housekeeping standards
  • Other duties as assigned

Forklift Safety Guidelines:

  • Carry loads close to the floor (approximately 4-6 inches) with the mast tilted slightly back
  • Observe all traffic rules, right-of-way procedures, warning signs, overhead clearances, and floor load limits
  • Sound the horn at cross aisles, exits, blind corners, and pedestrian walkways
  • Always travel at a safe speed and look in the direction of travel
  • Passengers are not permitted- only one operator per piece of equipment
  • Always yield the right of way to pedestrians, Once you begin to elevate the forks, ensure both the forklift and the load are clear of sprinkler pipes, racks, and other overhead structures
  • Tilt the mast back slightly while lifting and raise loads carefully and smoothly
  • When the forklift is not in use, park it in a designated area, lower the forks, neutralize the controls, and turn off the power

Use Safe work methods and lifting techniques:

  • Bend at the knees, not the waist, and keep loads close to your body when lifting or carrying
  • Avoid twisting or making side-to-side movements, turn your whole body instead
  • Keep your head and chin up while lifting to reduce strain on your back

Report all incidents:

  • Immediately report any accidents, near misses, or injuries to your supervisor
