What are some common challenges faced by Heap Leach Operators, and how can they be addressed?

Heap Leach Operators often encounter challenges such as managing solution flow rates, preventing channeling or clogging of the heap, and ensuring proper leach pad maintenance. Addressing these challenges requires careful monitoring of solution distribution, routine inspection of equipment, and adherence to safety protocols. Operators work closely with metallurgists and maintenance teams to troubleshoot issues quickly, which helps maximize metal recovery and minimize environmental impact.

What is the difference between Heap Leach vs Heap Leach?

AspectHeap Leach

Since the comparison is between the same job title, Heap Leach, there is no difference. Both refer to the same process used in mining operations to extract metals from ore using a leaching method involving stacked ore and chemical solutions.

What are heap leach operators?

Heap leach operators are professionals responsible for overseeing and managing the heap leaching process in mining operations. Heap leaching is a method used to extract valuable metals, such as gold, silver, or copper, from ore by stacking it in large heaps and applying a leaching solution that percolates through the material to dissolve the metals. Operators monitor solution distribution, maintain equipment, and ensure environmental and safety compliance. Their work is crucial for optimizing metal recovery and minimizing environmental impact.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Heap Leach Operator, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Heap Leach Operator, you need a solid understanding of mineral processing, basic chemistry, and experience with heavy equipment, often supported by a high school diploma or relevant technical training. Familiarity with leaching equipment, process control systems, and safety protocols is typically required. Strong attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective teamwork are crucial soft skills in this role. These competencies help ensure safe, efficient extraction of metals while minimizing environmental impact and operational downtime.

Job description

Orla Mining is striving to be the emerging gold producer of choice with a geographically diversified asset base, a prospective development and exploration portfolio, an experienced management team with a successful track record, and a high-quality board and shareholder base.
Orla is advancing permitting and development on our South Railroad Project, a feasibility-stage, open-pit heap leach project located on the prolific Carlin trend in Nevada. This project is part our larger South Carlin Complex which includes a prospective land package. We also operate the Camino Rojo Oxide Gold Mine, a gold and silver open-pit heap leach mine, located in Zacatecas State, Central Mexico. This low-cost operation is 100% owned by Orla, covers over 139,000 hectares, and includes a large sulphide mineral endowment located beneath the oxide resources. Orla also operates the Musselwhite Mine located in Northern Ontario, a gold mine with more than 25 years of operating history and the potential to expand resources and mine life for years to come.
Orla is building a legacy of excellence, respect and sustainable value through responsible gold mining. We work to create a net positive benefit for all and leaving a legacy beyond the life of our mines. We do this through building and operating high quality mines supported and led by an experienced team. We are custodians of the assets we run and the environments in which we operate, and we are committed to fostering a culture of excellence, care, and respect.
As we continue to grow, we are seeking a Senior Metallurgist to join our team. The purpose of this role is to provide advanced metallurgical guidance to optimize gold recovery, plant throughput, and operating efficiency while maintaining the highest standards of safety, environmental stewardship, and regulatory compliance.
Responsibilities

  • Identify process improvement opportunities and implement practical solutions to maximize gold recovery and operational efficiency.
  • Conduct metallurgical balancing, performance modeling, and data analysis to support operational decision-making.
  • Evaluate relationships between ore characteristics, recovery performance, and processing outcomes to improve mine-to-process integration.
  • Develop and maintain process control strategies that enhance plant stability and performance.
  • Prepare technical reports, operating summaries, recovery analyses, and performance recommendations.
  • Provide technical metallurgical support to Operations and Maintenance teams to ensure safe and efficient processing activities.
  • Lead investigations into process upsets, production losses, recovery variances, and equipment performance issues.
  • Support operational readiness, commissioning, and ramp-up activities as required
  • Maintain accurate metallurgical accounting and reconciliation systems to support production reporting and metal tracking.
  • Review sampling, assaying, and laboratory practices to ensure accuracy, precision, and data integrity.
  • Support implementation and maintenance of laboratory QA/QC programs and best practices.
  • Lead metallurgical test work programs and evaluate process optimization opportunities through laboratory and field investigations.
  • Assess new technologies, reagents, operating strategies, and process improvements to enhance operational performance.
  • Provide technical guidance to laboratory personnel, plant operators, and technical staff to support operational excellence and professional development.
  • Develop strong working relationships with consultants, vendors, contractors, and technical service providers to achieve project and operational goals.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in metallurgical engineering, chemical engineering, or similar field required.
  • A minimum of 7 years of experience in heap leach operations, cyanide-based recovery systems, and gold and silver recovery circuits required.
  • Assay and metallurgical laboratory management experience preferred.
  • Must be authorized to work in the U.S. for any employer.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license.

At Orla, we prioritize our people, creating and maintaining a workplace culture of diversity and inclusion where employees are respected, valued, and recognized for their contributions.
