What does a healthcare product designer do?

A Healthcare Product Designer is responsible for creating user-friendly products, systems, or services specifically for the healthcare industry. They work closely with doctors, nurses, patients, and other stakeholders to understand their needs and challenges. Their work involves designing digital tools like patient portals or medical apps, as well as physical devices such as medical equipment. The goal is to improve the user experience, safety, and effectiveness of healthcare products while ensuring they comply with industry regulations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a healthcare product designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Healthcare Product Designer, you need expertise in user-centered design, healthcare regulations, and experience with prototyping and usability testing, usually backed by a degree in design or a related field. Familiarity with design tools like Sketch, Figma, or Adobe XD, and knowledge of healthcare compliance standards (such as HIPAA) are typically required. Strong collaboration, problem-solving, and communication skills help designers understand complex healthcare workflows and engage stakeholders. These abilities are crucial to creating safe, effective, and user-friendly healthcare products that meet regulatory standards and improve patient outcomes.

What are the typical challenges faced by healthcare product designers when balancing user needs with regulatory requirements?

Healthcare Product Designers often encounter the challenge of creating user-friendly solutions while ensuring compliance with strict healthcare regulations, such as HIPAA or FDA guidelines. This means carefully considering patient privacy, data security, and accessibility alongside usability and aesthetics. Collaborating closely with regulatory experts, clinicians, and patients is essential to gather feedback and address these constraints early in the design process. Successfully navigating these challenges not only ensures legal compliance but also results in products that are both effective and trusted by end users.

Brain Co. is an applied AI startup co-founded by Jared Kushner and Elad Gil, and backed by leading Silicon Valley builders including Patrick Collison and Andrej Karpathy. We are building AI applications for the world’s most important institutions, delivering impact on real-world problems across governments, healthcare systems, and critical industries. Our progress so far:

  • Automated construction permitting for a sovereign government → 80% faster, unlocking $375M+ in value
  • Optimized supply chains for a leading global energy company → 30% lower cost, 99% reliability, preventing $100M+ in losses
  • Streamlined hospital patient care across national health systems → 40% better outcomes, 80% less admin work

Company momentum:

  • Raised a $55M Series A from leading investors
  • Built a team of 70+ AI experts from Tesla, Google DeepMind, NVIDIA, and Databricks

At Brain Co., we focus on applying frontier AI to real institutional challenges, working alongside governments, healthcare systems, and critical industries to modernize how essential services operate. We are looking for leaders who want to help bring new technology into institutions that impact millions of people.

About The Role

We are looking for a passionate and experienced Product Designer. You will play a critical role in shaping both the visual and structural design of complex, AI-driven software products. Your contributions will directly influence the company’s trajectory and the success of our innovative product suite.

What You\'ll Do
  • Lead end-to-end design efforts, including UX research, interaction design, visual design, prototyping, and testing.
  • Experiment with new AI design tools like Lovable, v0, and more to define how Product Design’s function on product teams is changing.
  • Collaborate closely with product managers, engineers, and stakeholders to understand user requirements and translate them into elegant, intuitive solutions.
  • Design sophisticated software experiences tailored for enterprise and governmental environments, prioritizing usability, scalability, and aesthetics.
  • Help establish and evolve the design system and guidelines to ensure consistency, quality, and efficiency across all products.
  • Advocate for the user, continuously seeking insights and data to iterate and refine our product experiences.
Qualifications
  • 10+ years of professional experience in software product design, with a strong portfolio demonstrating elegant solutions for complex enterprise software.
  • Proven experience designing visually appealing, workflow-oriented products that significantly improve user productivity.
  • Exceptional skills in design tools (Figma, Adobe Creative Suite, etc.) and familiarity with prototyping tools (e.g., Rive, Framer).
  • Strong understanding of UX principles, design thinking, and accessibility standards.
  • Experience working collaboratively in fast-paced, agile, and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, with the ability to clearly articulate design decisions and rationale.
  • Prior experience in AI-driven or data-intensive software solutions is a significant plus.
Why Join Us
  • Ship quickly, iterate constantly and see your work deployed at global scale
  • Collaborate with industry veterans from Airbnb, Apple, Google and more
  • Accelerate your career with ownership based on impact, not tenure
  • Earn competitive compensation + meaningful equity in a high-growth company
  • Thrive in a culture built on speed, curiosity, and impact

If you want to see your work deployed at scale with real impact, Brain Co. is the place to build.

At Brain Co., we believe in transparent, data-driven compensation that attracts and retains top talent. Our compensation framework is built on market research from leading platforms including Pave and Carta, ensuring our offers are competitive and equitable across all roles. We regularly benchmark our compensation packages against technology companies to maintain our position as an employer of choice.
