Summary:

The W. Cary Edwards School of Nursing and Health Professions is seeking a detail-oriented Healthcare Laboratory Assistant to support the day-to-day operation of the School’s experiential learning environments. Partnering with the Director of Experiential Learning, the Assistant helps run high-fidelity simulations and skills laboratory sessions and, as the program grows, will support the School’s new virtual reality (VR) lab. Working alongside mentors and students, the Assistant maintains and organizes the laboratories, prepares materials and equipment for each session, assists during simulations and skills practice, and ensures every learning space is clean, safe, well-stocked, and ready for use. This role requires strong organization, attention to detail, and comfort with laboratory and simulation technology.

Responsibilities:

The Healthcare Laboratory Assistant will:

- Set up and organize laboratory equipment, supplies, and materials for scheduled skills, simulation, and VR lab sessions

- Clean, sanitize, and reset laboratory equipment and workspaces before and after each use, in accordance with infection-control and safety standards

- Ensure all laboratory and simulation equipment is in working order; troubleshoot minor issues and report malfunctions or needed repairs to the Director of Experiential Learning

- Maintain inventory of laboratory and simulation supplies and assist with ordering, receiving, and stocking as needed

- Assist with the setup, operation, and breakdown of simulation scenarios, including the preparation, moulage, and positioning of high-fidelity mannequins and task trainers

- Support the Director of Experiential Learning in programming, running, and resetting simulation scenarios as directed

- Prepare simulated medications, charts, and supplies so scenarios run smoothly and realistically

- Assist mentors during skills lab sessions by setting up practice stations and providing materials and equipment to students as needed

- As the VR lab is established, assist with the setup, use, sanitizing, and safe storage of VR headsets, controllers, and related hardware and software, and help mentors and students launch VR learning modules

- Maintain accurate records of laboratory usage, equipment, and inventory, and enter student data into designated databases and learning- or simulation-management systems

- Assist with scheduling laboratory sessions and coordinating laboratory activities

- Perform related administrative and clerical duties as assigned, including filing, data entry, and maintaining laboratory documentation

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

- Strong organizational and time-management skills, with attention to detail and the ability to follow instructions accurately

- Good communication and interpersonal skills and a professional, service-oriented approach

- Ability to work independently and as part of a team

- Comfort learning and troubleshooting new technology, including simulation and VR equipment

Proficiency with MS Office Suite, Google Workspace, and Learning Management Systems

- Ability to lift and move up to 50 pounds, stand for extended periods, and perform repetitive tasks with the manual dexterity to handle laboratory, simulation, and VR equipment

Requirements:

Education: Graduation from an accredited college with a Bachelor's degree or equivalency as determined by the appointing authority.

Experience: Experience: Two years professional experience in a field that is directly related to the functions of the position to be filled or equivalency as determined by the appointing authority.

 - Applicants who do not possess the required education may substitute required experience on a year-for-year basis (30 credit hours is considered one year of college).
 - A Ph.D. degree or Ed.D. degree may be substituted for two years of the required experience.

Preferred Requirements:

- Previous experience in a laboratory, simulation, or healthcare environment

- Basic understanding of healthcare practices and terminology

- Familiarity with simulation, audiovisual, or virtual reality technology
