What is healthcare consulting?

Healthcare consulting is a field where professionals advise organizations within the healthcare industry—including hospitals, clinics, pharmaceutical companies, and insurers—on how to improve their business strategies, operations, and patient care. Consultants help clients solve complex problems, comply with regulations, implement new technologies, and increase efficiency. They often analyze data, conduct research, and develop tailored solutions to address challenges unique to the healthcare sector. The ultimate goal is to help healthcare organizations deliver better outcomes while managing costs and complying with industry standards.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a healthcare consultant?

To thrive as a Healthcare Consultant, you need a solid background in healthcare systems, data analysis, and problem-solving, typically supported by a degree in healthcare administration, business, or a related field. Familiarity with healthcare analytics tools, EMR/EHR systems, and certifications such as Certified Healthcare Consultant (CHC) or Lean Six Sigma are often expected. Strong communication, adaptability, and project management skills are vital for building client relationships and driving effective solutions. These competencies enable consultants to deliver impactful recommendations that improve organizational efficiency and patient outcomes in a complex industry.

How do healthcare consultants typically collaborate with client teams to implement recommended changes?

Healthcare consultants work closely with client teams by facilitating workshops, conducting training sessions, and providing ongoing support throughout the implementation process. They often collaborate with stakeholders from various departments—such as clinical staff, administration, and IT—to ensure that changes are practical and tailored to the organization’s needs. Regular meetings, progress tracking, and feedback loops are common practices to address challenges and ensure successful adoption of new processes or technologies. This collaborative approach helps build trust and ensures sustainable improvements in healthcare delivery.

Healthcare Data Engineer

Full-time Regular

12 days ago Requisition ID: 1508

Blue & Co., LLC is an independent advisory and accounting firm providing tax, audit, and consulting services with a focus on practical, client-centered solutions. We combine deep industry expertise with a collaborative culture to help clients navigate complex financial and operational challenges.

Help Build the Future of Data Consulting

Blue & Co. is making a significant investment in Data & Analytics as a strategic growth initiative for the firm. We are building a modern Data & Analytics practice focused on developing proprietary data products, AI-enabled consulting services, and scalable analytics platforms that help healthcare organizations make better business decisions.

We believe AI is fundamentally transforming how consulting is delivered. Successful candidates will be comfortable leveraging modern AI tools to accelerate analysis, improve code quality, automate repetitive work, and solve complex business problems while exercising sound professional judgment.

While this position will spend most of its time supporting our nationally recognized Healthcare Consulting practice, the solutions you build will help establish scalable capabilities that extend across the entire firm.

This is an opportunity to help shape a rapidly growing practice - not simply support one.

Preferred Locations: Louisville, Indianapolis. Candidates in other Blue & Co., LLC locations will also be considered.

Key Responsibilities
  • Partner with leadership to architect an enterprise healthcare data ecosystem and develop multi-year technical roadmaps aligned with business objectives.
  • Design reusable data platforms that support multiple healthcare clients rather than one-off solutions.
  • Build frameworks and accelerators that improve delivery speed across consulting engagements.
  • Design, build, and maintain scalable ETL/ELT pipelines to ingest and transform data from diverse internal and external healthcare sources.
  • Perform hands‑on data extraction and scripting across hospital EHR systems (Epic, Meditech, CPSI, Cerner, etc.) and financial platforms.
  • Proactively identify opportunities to automate manual data movement and validation tasks to ensure high data integrity and reduced processing times.
  • Implement and monitor data governance and security protocols to ensure all data engineering practices remain PHI/HIPAA compliant.
  • Establish engineering best practices for the broader Data & Analytics team.
  • Partner with Data Analysts and healthcare consultants to bring new analytics products to market.
  • Evaluate emerging AI and data technologies and recommend where they can improve consulting delivery.
  • Provide the vision and hands‑on coaching necessary to ensure data analysts are supported in their technical growth and project execution.
Technical Requirements
  • Experience designing and implementing cloud‑based data platforms using Microsoft Fabric, Azure, Snowflake, or comparable modern analytics technologies.
  • Deep familiarity with 835/837 claims data, HL7/FHIR standards, and EHR/EMR database structures.
  • Experience handling both structured (relational) and unstructured (JSON, XML, flat file) healthcare data feeds.
  • Advanced SQL development and query optimization skills; proficiency in Python or PowerShell for data automation.
  • Strong understanding of dimensional modeling, Star Schema design, and data lakehouse architecture.
Preferred & Related Skills
  • Experience working in healthcare consulting, reimbursement advisory, or revenue cycle services.
  • Proven ability to navigate clinical, financial, and pharmacy data extracts from complex healthcare environments.
  • Experience creating scalable, reusable healthcare data products that can be deployed across multiple clients.
  • Ability to translate complex infrastructure and data architecture concepts for non‑technical consulting leads and client executives.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively leverage AI tools (Copilot, ChatGPT, Claude, or similar) to accelerate engineering, automate repetitive tasks, optimize code quality, and solve complex technical problems.
Nice to Haves
  • Knowledge of Medicare cost reporting (HCRIS) data structures
  • Familiarity with Prompt Engineering to leverage LLMs for troubleshooting and pipeline optimization.
Education & Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Data Engineering, Information Systems, or a related technical field.
  • 5+ years of experience in data engineering, backend architecture, or ETL development.

We are responsive. We are caring. We are advocates.

Blue & Co., LLC, is an equal opportunity employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to age, color, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, disability, genetic information, national origin, race, religion, veteran status, or any other protected category.
