What is a healthcare assistant?

Healthcare Assistants (HCAs) are trained professionals who support nurses, doctors, and other healthcare staff in providing care to patients. Their duties typically include helping patients with personal care tasks such as washing, dressing, and eating, as well as taking vital signs, making beds, and maintaining a clean environment. HCAs play a vital role in hospitals, care homes, and community settings, ensuring patients are comfortable and their basic needs are met. While they do not provide medical diagnosis or treatment, their support is essential to the smooth running of healthcare services.

To thrive as a Healthcare Assistant, you need a basic understanding of patient care, hygiene, and safety procedures, typically supported by a relevant healthcare qualification such as a Care Certificate or NVQ. These skills ensure the delivery of high-quality patient care and contribute to the smooth operation of healthcare environments.
