General Summary:
The Program Director is responsible for the leadership, organization, operation, and the general administration of the Hematology/Medical Oncology Program. The Program Director establishes the strategic direction of the program and is responsible for the standards, quality and reputation of the Hematology/Medical Oncology Program. The Program Director is expected to integrate the Hematology/Medical Oncology Program with physician practice and hospital clinical services in a manner that enhances value and quality, and that promotes an optimal environment for professional practice and medical education.
Responsibilities:
1. Dedicate at least 8 hours per week (.2 FTE) of his or her professional effort to the administrative and educational activities of the Hematology/Medical Oncology educational program and receive institutional support for this time.
2. Be responsible for monitoring fellow stress, including mental or emotional conditions inhibiting performance or learning, and drug- or alcohol-related dysfunction a) Be sensitive to the need for timely provision of confidential counseling and psychological support services to fellows b) Situations that demand excessive service or that consistently produce undesirable stress on fellows must be evaluated and modified.
3. Oversee development of an effective fellow advising program.
4. Have supervisory authority over all educational tracks at the primary site and at all participating sites for the Hematology/Medical Oncology Fellowship Program.
5. Participate in academic societies and in educational programs designed to enhance his or her educational and administrative skills
6. Monitor fellow supervision at all participating sites. Ensure that the fellowship does not place excessive reliance on fellows for service as opposed to education. The Program Director shall assure that fellows are assigned clinical responsibilities appropriate for their level of training and level of knowledge and skill, are properly supervised in clinical assignments, and provide safe and effective patient care. The Program Director shall develop and maintain written supervision standards, requirements, and procedures in accordance with current ACGME requirements.
7. Recruit and select candidates for the fellowship program through the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) Medical Subspecialties Match unless otherwise approved by Designated Institution Official and GMEC chair.
8. Submit reports on program, faculty, and fellow performance to the Graduate Medical Education Committee (GMEC) as requested by the Chair of the GMEC.
9. Ensure the implementation of policies and procedures consistent with the institutional and program requirements, including but not limited to policies for supervision, fellow work hours and the working environment, moonlighting, grievance procedures, and due process, as established by the Graduate Medical Education Committee, and in compliance with the ACGME Institutional Requirements.
10. Maintain current knowledge of the accreditation and operational requirements of the fellowship, including monitoring current trends and anticipating changes.
11. Obtain approval of the DIO before submitting information or requests to the ACGME for: a) All applications for ACGME accreditation of new programs b) The addition or deletion of a participating institution c) A change in the structure, length, or format of the educational program d) A change in the approved fellow complement e) Progress reports requested by the Review Committee f) Responses to all proposed adverse actions g) Requests for increase or any change to fellow work hours h) Voluntary withdrawals of ACGME accredited programs i) Requests for appeal of an adverse action
12. Approve a local director at each participating site who is accountable for fellow education.
13. Organize the faculty to deliver a consistently high-quality education program.
14. Evaluate the performance of faculty in meeting program objectives, including fellow satisfaction with the program.
15. Develop and implement programs to enhance the knowledge, clinical expertise, and teaching skills of the faculty.
16. Assure that faculty meets research and scholarly activity requirements of the program, including active participation in the clinical discussions, rounds, journal clubs, and research conferences in a manner that promotes a spirit of inquiry and scholarship.
17. The Program Director and the faculty are responsible for the preparation and implementation of the Hematology/Medical Oncology fellowship curriculum to provide a high-quality education program to meet the requirements of the ACGME and the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM).
18. The Program Director is responsible for establishing the clinical assignments and schedules of the fellows to achieve the educational objectives of the program. Fellow schedules and assignments for each fellow in the program are expected to be established for the entire academic year not later than June 1 for the upcoming academic year beginning July 1.
19. The Program Director and the faculty are responsible for evaluating fellow performance in relation to the educational objectives of the program and the ACGME's milestones for Hematology/Medical Oncology.
20. The Program Director, with input from GMEC, shall establish and maintain a Clinical Competency Committee in accordance with AGME requirements and shall maintain appropriate documentation of the evaluation process in accordance with ACGME requirements.
21. The Program Director, with input from the GMEC, must appoint a Program Evaluation Committee whose responsibilities will be to document a formal, systematic evaluation of the curriculum at least annually and render a written, annual program evaluation.
22. The Program Director, with input from the faculty, is responsible for making decisions to promote fellows to the next level of training in the program and for decisions to graduate fellows upon completion of the program. The Program Director is responsible for documenting completion of training and qualifications for each fellow, as required by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The Program Director is responsible for providing verification of fellowship education for all fellows, including those who leave the program prior to completion.
23. The Program Director shall work in cooperation with the DIO and other members of hospital administration to assure the effective, efficient, and fiscally responsible operation of the Hematology/Medical Oncology Program. The Program Director shall articulate a clear operational plan for the fellowship program, and advocate for resources, including faculty, facilities, educational services or materials, and finances, required for optimal operation of the program.
24. The Program Director shall participate on the Graduate Medical Education Committee, and other hospital committees as requested by the Designated Institutional Official.
25. All other duties as assigned within scope and range of position.
