What is a health inspector?

Health inspectors are public health professionals responsible for ensuring that businesses, especially those that handle food and sanitation, comply with local, state, and federal health regulations. They conduct routine inspections of restaurants, food processing plants, public pools, and other establishments to identify potential health hazards. Health inspectors educate business owners on health codes, issue citations for violations, and may shut down facilities that pose significant risks to public health. Their work helps prevent the spread of diseases and promotes safe, healthy environments for the community.

What does a health inspector do?

A health inspector assesses various businesses, homes, and industrial facilities regarding their compliance with internal and external health and safety regulations. For this career, your responsibilities include assisting multiple industrial facilities, residences, and food service establishments to ensure they are complying with environmental standards and health codes. You must also help them provide safe, clean, and healthy work areas for their employees through routine checkups and effective policies.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a health inspector?

To thrive as a Health Inspector, you need a solid understanding of public health regulations, safety standards, and inspection procedures, usually supported by a degree in environmental health, biology, or a related field. Strong attention to detail, integrity, and effective communication help you accurately identify violations and interact with business owners. These skills ensure the enforcement of health codes, protect public safety, and foster compliance in various establishments.

What are some common challenges health inspectors face when conducting inspections, and how can they effectively address them?

Health Inspectors often encounter challenges such as uncooperative business owners, incomplete records, or language barriers during inspections. To address these issues, inspectors rely on strong communication skills, professionalism, and a thorough understanding of health codes. Building rapport with staff, clearly explaining regulations, and being prepared with translated materials or interpreters can help ensure compliance. Staying updated on changing regulations and maintaining a calm, objective approach also support effective inspections.

Key responsibilities

  • Perform dimensional and visual inspections on complex mechanical and welded components using precision measurement tools and equipment.

  • Verify parts and assemblies against engineering drawings, models, and specifications using GD&T principles.

  • Conduct in-process, first-article, and final inspections to ensure all product meets design and process requirements prior to release.

Job description

Hermeus is a venture-backed defense aviation company reclaiming the lost art of rapid iterative prototyping to build the fastest aircraft in the world today. By prioritizing relentless hardware iteration, we deliver high-speed systems at the pace of the modern battlefield. We work with the Department of War to provide the high-speed capabilities our nation and its allies need to maintain a durable, asymmetric advantage.

About The Role:

We are seeking a Quality Inspector to join our growing team and ensure the highest level of quality and reliability across all hardware produced at our facility. As one of the first inspectors on-site, you will play a key role in establishing inspection standards, methods, and processes to support the production of precision aerospace and defense components.

This position requires a highly detail-oriented, hands-on professional with a deep understanding of mechanical inspection, precision measurement, and documentation practices. You’ll work directly with manufacturing, quality engineering, and design teams to ensure all parts meet dimensional and process conformance requirements — from prototype through production.
Responsibilities
  • Perform dimensional and visual inspections on complex mechanical and welded components using precision measurement tools and equipment (e.g., calipers, micrometers, height gauges, CMM, FARO arm).
  • Verify parts and assemblies against engineering drawings, models, and specifications using GD&T principles.
  • Conduct in-process, first-article, and final inspections, ensuring all product meets design and process requirements prior to release.
  • Review and interpret engineering drawings, work orders, and technical documentation to identify inspection criteria.
  • Create, complete, and maintain inspection reports, non-conformance documentation, and traceability records in accordance with internal quality standards.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with manufacturing engineers, technicians, and quality engineers to drive root cause analysis and corrective action on non-conformances.
  • Assist in the development of inspection methods, tooling, and quality procedures to improve efficiency and repeatability.
  • Support supplier part verification and incoming inspection for purchased or outsourced components.
  • Maintain and calibrate inspection tools and gages in compliance with calibration schedules and quality system requirements.
  • Contribute to a continuous improvement culture focused on process capability, accuracy, and throughput.
Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; associate degree or technical certification in mechanical inspection, manufacturing, or metrology preferred.
  • 3+ years of hands-on experience in mechanical inspection within aerospace, defense, or high-precision manufacturing environments.
  • Working knowledge of GD&T (ASME Y14.5) and the ability to interpret complex engineering drawings.
  • Experience inspecting tight-tolerance metallic components such as machined, welded, fluids components, or sheet metal assemblies.
  • Proven ability to document, communicate, and resolve quality issues effectively in collaboration with engineering teams.
Preferred Skills and Experience
  • Experience with CMM programming (PC-DMIS, Verisurf, or similar).
  • Familiarity with ISO 9001, AS9100, or equivalent quality management systems.
  • Knowledge of NDT methods (visual, dye penetrant, radiographic, or ultrasonic inspection).
  • Experience working in a high-mix, low-volume production environment with rapid iteration cycles.
  • Proficiency with ERP or quality management software systems (e.g., NetSuite, SAP, or Solumina).
  • Strong communication and documentation skills with the ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proficiency with precision measurement tools and metrology equipment, including CMMs and optical measurement systems.
  • Hands on experience with Laser trackers and/or software
Physical Requirements:
  • Must be willing to be hands-on on the manufacturing floor daily.
  • Ability to lift up to 25 lbs and work around industrial equipment as needed.
  • Flexible schedule may be required to support production priorities and critical milestones.

The salary range listed for this role is intended as a general guideline. Final compensation will be determined based on a variety of factors, including role scope and responsibilities, relevant experience, education and training, key skills, market data, and business needs.

At Hermeus, compensation is only one part of our total rewards package. We offer competitive pay, equity, and a range of benefits designed to support our team.

Benefits:
  • Health & Wellness: 100% employer-paid healthcare and pet insurance
  • Financial: Competitive pay, stock options, 401(k) retirement plan, and potential year-end bonuses
  • Time Off: Paid parental leave, 12 federal holidays, unlimited PTO for exempt employees, and generous accrued PTO for non-exempt employees
  • Office Perks: Weekly paid office lunches and fully stocked breakrooms
