How much do health equity jobs pay per year?
What is a health equity?
A Health Equity job focuses on addressing disparities in healthcare access, quality, and outcomes among different populations. Professionals in this field work to identify and eliminate barriers related to socioeconomic status, race, ethnicity, geography, and other social determinants of health. Roles may include policy development, program management, research, or community engagement to promote fair and just healthcare. These positions exist in hospitals, nonprofits, government agencies, and academic institutions. The goal is to ensure everyone has the opportunity to achieve optimal health regardless of their background.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the health equity position, and why are they important?
To thrive in a Health Equity role, you need a strong background in public health, data analysis, program management, and a thorough understanding of health disparities and social determinants of health; a degree in public health, health administration, or a related field is often required. Familiarity with data analysis software (such as SPSS, SAS, or Excel), community health assessment tools, and sometimes certifications like a Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) are advantageous. Strong soft skills include cultural competency, advocacy, relationship building, and excellent communication for engaging diverse stakeholders. These qualifications are essential to effectively assess needs, design impactful interventions, and drive equitable health outcomes within communities.
What are the main responsibilities of someone working in a health equity position?
Professionals in Health Equity roles are primarily responsible for assessing health disparities within populations, developing and implementing programs to address those disparities, and evaluating the effectiveness of interventions. Their daily work often includes data analysis, community outreach, partnership building with local organizations, and advocating for policy changes that promote equitable health access. Team collaboration is common, with frequent coordination alongside public health officials, healthcare providers, and community leaders. This role offers opportunities to lead impactful projects that can shape health policy and improve outcomes for underserved communities. Career growth often involves moving into higher-level program management, research, or policy-making positions.

Job Summary
The College of Literature, Science, and the Arts (LSA) at the University of Michigan seeks outstanding scholars for new tenure-track assistant professor faculty positions as part of the Michigan Program for Advancing Cultural Transformation (M-PACT) Program. This hiring program, a federally funded, university-wide faculty initiative, aims to recruit faculty with a demonstrated and ongoing record of driving transformative research, life-changing teaching, and accessible clinical care that will support the health of all, including communities who have been underserved. By partnering with faculty throughout their careers, M-PACT strengthens the capacity of those who serve as catalysts for change in academic and healthcare environments via their scholarship, teaching, and/or service activities with research interests suitable for funding by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). This call is part of a broader university effort to enhance inclusive excellence across the biomedical and health sciences community. This is a full-time, university year appointment with an anticipated start date of August 25, 2027.
Through the M-PACT program, the Department of Women's and Gender Studies (WGS) seeks a scholar whose work brings feminist, gender, queer, or sexuality studies to bear on health and health equity. We construe health broadly, including physical, psychological, and behavioral health. We are also interested in health policy as well as social and structural conditions that shape health outcomes and health inequities. Field of specialization is open, as is methodological approach; we welcome interpretive, qualitative, quantitative, and community-engaged research. Relevant fields might include medical sociology or anthropology; social, community, or health psychology; social epidemiology; demography; public health; science and technology studies; and bioethics. The successful candidate will have an outstanding research program with strong potential for NIH funding. A degree, graduate certificate, or formal specialization in women's, gender, or sexuality studies is preferred. In the absence of a formal credential, candidates must have a demonstrated record of sustained scholarship in this area.
Required Qualifications*
Applicants must have a Ph.D. or terminal degree conferred by July 1, 2027, must never have had a tenure-track faculty appointment, and must be eligible for Early Stage Investigator Status for NIH grants.
