Head Teacher (FOR CHILDREN OF AGE 2-5 y.o.)

The opportunity

Kings Bay Y/ JCC Brooklyn is a community space that connects, uplifts and inspires. It is a Jewish Community Center with and without walls. Students are engaged in activities that are both relevant and of great interest to them, including art, literacy, dance, and music. They will use their five senses to explore the world around them and be exposed to a variety of different learning materials.

We welcome everyone from all religious, racial, and ethnic backgrounds as we provide a wide array of programs for children and families to explore Jewish culture, values, holidays, and Israel through music, storytelling, art, Hebrew, and food. We offer early childhood programs, summer day camps, after-school and other fun and engaging programs for families

The Head Teacher is responsible for the education and care of the children and for developing curriculum, activities, and routines in a manner appropriate to the age of the children and contributing to the effective operation of the overall program. The head teacher reports to the director. The head teacher’s responsibilities include but are not limited to, the following description.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Interpret and be able to articulate school philosophy and the Department of Health guidelines, goals, and procedures.

  • Respond appropriately to emergencies with awareness of emergency procedures.

  • Prepare the classroom arrangement and environment for the children prior to the start of school and on a daily basis.

  • Relate to children in a warm, respectful manner and set appropriate and reasonable limits and expectations.

  • Assess children’s needs and developmental progress on an ongoing basis.

  • Prepare written reports on each child prior to each Parent/Teacher conference.

  • Communicate with parents in an ongoing manner using email, phone calls, etc. to provide daily updates, curriculum updates, and photographs.

  • Maintain communication during summer break as needed for planning following the school year and documentation and feedback for the previous school year.

  • Be able to lift, carry, and hold children, stop and bend to a child’s level, and stand for long periods of time throughout the day.

  • Communicate daily and meet weekly in the classroom with the assistant teacher. The assistant teacher should be advised of the daily plans and have access to planned activities for reference.

  • Supervise and assess student teachers and aides assigned to the classroom.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Education or related field (Required)

  • New York State teaching certification in Early Childhood or currently working toward certification, including recent graduates (required)

  • Knowledge and skills relating to and planning for preschool children

  • Ability to interact in a supportive and nurturing manner with children and parents

  • Ability to organize and plan, both independently and cooperatively with others

  • Excellent organizational, written, and verbal communication skills

  • At least one year of childcare experience (Required)

Schedule

Full-time position: 8:00 AM - 4:00 PM with 30 min break

Part-time position: 8:00 AM - 1:00 PM

Salary

$35 - $37 per hour
