Job description

The YMCA of Pierce and Kitsap Counties is seeking a Head Swim Coach to join our team.
The YMCAfocuses on empowering people in all forms, by improving health and well-being and inspiring action in and across our neighborhoods.
This position supports the work of the Y, a leading non-profit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.
The Head Swim Coach provides direct leadership, instruction and motivation for students participating in recreational swim team. If hired for this position, you will instruct beginning to advanced swimming lessons and enforce safety skills according to age group and swim level according to YMCA Competitive Swimming guidelines.
Key Responsibilities
  • Submits athlete meet information using Team Manager Software or Team Unify.
  • Attends Puget Sound Swimming Association or United States Swimming meetings and abide by league regulations.
  • Coordinates recreational meets with local teams and YMCA of Pierce and Kitsap County branches.
  • Prepares swim team plans with a natural progression of appropriate skills for the abilities and ages of the participants.
  • Coaches swimming in basic to advanced skills according to the swim team participant level following YMCA Competitive Swimming guidelines
  • Monitors swimmer progress. Report progress to Program Director and inquiring parents.
  • Assist in the supervision and direction of Assistant Coaches

Are you a good fit?
  • You are committed to valuing and promoting diversity and contributing to an inclusive working and learning environment.
  • You have one to two years related experience (preferred).
  • You have previous experience working with youth preferably in a program setting and diverse populations.
  • You have an active recreational coaching style.
  • You are able to demonstrate swim instructor skills in accordance with YMCA standards.
  • You have experience and knowledge in coaching a swim team (preferred).
  • You are able to coach and observe participants in proper stroke techniques.
  • You love being in the water.
  • Preferred certifications: YMCA Lifeguard and Principles of Competitive Swimming and Diving certification.
  • Must be able to pass Background and Reference checks (in accordance with the WA State Fair Chance Act).
  • You are willing and able to complete Child Abuse Prevention training on the first day, as well as, other online trainings as required.

Wage: $19.61 to $24.76 per hour, depending on qualifications
Hours: Part-Time, Up to 25 hours per week

Position Summary
The Head Swim Coach provides direct leadership, instruction and motivation for students participating in recreational swim team. Instructs in beginning to advanced swimming and safety skills according to age group and swim level according to YMCA Competitive Swimming guidelines. Provides a quality experience to children and parents focused on YMCA core values: caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility.
Key Responsibilities
• Coach swimming in basic and advanced skills according to the swim team participant level as assigned.
• Arrive to shift prepared with a swim workout that meets the curriculum of the National YMCA Swim Program and with the necessary equipment for the session.
• Monitor swimmer progress. Be available before and after practice to report progress to the program director and inquiring parents.
• Submit athlete meet information using Team Manager Software or Team Unify.
• Attend Puget Sound Swimming Association or United States Swimming meetings and abide by league regulations.
• Coordinate recreational meets with local teams and YMCA of Pierce and Kitsap County branches.
• Prepare swim team plans with a natural progression of appropriate skills for the abilities and ages of the participants.
• Assist in the supervision and direction of assistant coaches.
• Ensure the safety of swim team students at all times, setting up practice in a formation that allows you quick access to all participants and keeping the walkways and exit areas clean and clear.
• Meet performance measurement by telling the Y story and raising charitable dollars to fulfill our mission.
• Assist staff leadership team in reaching campaign goals through recruiting campaigners, making personal asks and supporting branch events.
• Cleaning and sanitation protocols will be required of all staff.
• Staff will be responsible for frequent touchpoint cleaning and sanitizing in specific areas.
• Staff are expected to adhere to all safety protocols and procedures, including the use of PPE.
• Embraces and actively promotes an inclusive and equitable work environment.
• Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications, Skills and Abilities
• One to two years related experience preferred.
• Principles of Swimming and Diving certification.
• Must have an active recreational coaching style.
• Positive attitude and previous experience with diverse populations.
• Must be able to demonstrate swim instructor skills in accordance with YMCA standards. Experience and knowledge coaching youth swim team preferred.
• YMCA Lifeguarding or Red Cross Lifeguarding certification (and obtain YMCA Lifeguarding certification within 60 days of hire) with prerequisite CPRO/AED, Oxygen Administration and First aid certifications.
• Complete online Child Abuse Prevention training on first day. Complete other online and in-person training as required.
Working Conditions/Physical Demands
• Regularly required to talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms.
• Occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
• Must frequently lift or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift or move a higher amount.
• Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
• Occasionally may need to plan and participate in programming outdoors.
