Head Server information

What is a head server?

Head Servers are experienced restaurant staff members responsible for supervising servers, ensuring high-quality customer service, and managing dining room operations. They often coordinate reservations, assist with training new staff, handle customer complaints, and support the restaurant manager in daily tasks. Their leadership helps maintain smooth service and a positive dining experience for guests.

How does the head server typically coordinate with other staff members during a busy shift?

As a Head Server, you play a crucial role in ensuring smooth communication and coordination among servers, kitchen staff, and management. During busy shifts, you are responsible for delegating tasks, addressing guest concerns, and facilitating quick problem-solving on the floor. You'll often act as a liaison between the front-of-house and back-of-house teams to ensure orders are accurate and service runs efficiently. Strong leadership, multitasking, and interpersonal skills are essential for maintaining a positive team dynamic and high-quality guest experience.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a head server, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Head Server, you need extensive experience in food service, knowledge of menu offerings, and often a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with point-of-sale (POS) systems, reservation software, and sometimes food safety certifications are typically required. Outstanding leadership, multitasking, and communication skills help you manage staff and create a positive dining experience. These abilities ensure efficient service, satisfied guests, and smooth restaurant operations.
