Job description

Position Summary
The Eclipse Foundation is seeking a Front-End Web Developer to join our Software Development team and help build and maintain the web platforms, reusable components, and tools that support the Eclipse Foundation and its communities. This is an existing role on the team.
You will work on a range of public-facing websites and web applications, as well as shared front-end infrastructure used across our web properties. This includes developing reusable components, integrating with REST APIs, maintaining our component library, improving existing websites and applications, and helping establish consistent front-end development practices.
You will work closely with other developers and internal stakeholders in a geographically distributed team. Much of our work is developed in the open, and we value pragmatic solutions, maintainable code, good documentation, and continuous improvement.

Salary Range: $65,000 to $85,000 CAD / €40,000 to €50,000

This is a remote position. The selected candidate will work from their home office. All qualified candidates will be considered, with preference for candidates based in Canada (Ottawa), France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Portugal, and Belgium.
Responsibilities
  • Design, develop, and maintain reusable front-end components and libraries used across Eclipse Foundation websites and applications.
  • Contribute to the evolution and maintenance of our front-end design system and component library.
  • Develop responsive, accessible, and standards-compliant user interfaces.
  • Build and maintain front-end applications and reusable components that integrate with REST APIs and work across different web platforms and frameworks.
  • Write clean, maintainable, and testable JavaScript and TypeScript code.
  • Develop and maintain automated tests for front-end components and applications.
  • Document components, development patterns, APIs, and technical decisions.
  • Review code and contribute to shared development standards and best practices.
  • Collaborate with designers, developers, and internal stakeholders to understand requirements and develop appropriate solutions.
  • Work with stakeholders and other developers to prioritise requests, clarify requirements, and balance competing needs.
  • Diagnose and resolve front-end defects, performance issues, and browser compatibility problems.
  • Improve web accessibility, performance, search engine optimisation, and overall user experience.
  • Contribute improvements and fixes to open source projects used by the Eclipse Foundation when appropriate.
  • Evaluate new technologies and recommend their adoption when they provide clear benefits.

Required Skills and Experience
  • At least two years of professional web development experience.
  • Strong knowledge of HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and modern front-end development practices.
  • Experience developing applications with React.
  • Experience with TypeScript.
  • Experience designing and developing reusable UI components.
  • Experience integrating applications with REST APIs.
  • Experience writing automated tests and testable front-end code.
  • Understanding of responsive web design and modern browser standards.
  • Understanding of web accessibility principles and practices.
  • Familiarity with Git and collaborative development workflows using platforms such as GitHub or GitLab.
  • Ability to troubleshoot front-end issues using browser development tools.
  • Ability to write clear technical documentation.

Assets
  • Experience with component development and documentation tools such as Storybook.
  • Experience developing or maintaining a design system or shared component library.
  • Experience with Web Components and libraries such as Lit or Stencil.
  • Experience with Bootstrap.
  • Experience with Sass or other CSS preprocessing tools.
  • Experience with static site generators such as Hugo.
  • Familiarity with PHP and experience working with content management systems such as Drupal or WordPress.
  • Knowledge of search engine optimisation.
  • Experience with modern front-end build tools and the Node.js/npm ecosystem.
  • Experience with continuous integration and automated deployment workflows.
  • Experience with visual regression, end-to-end, or accessibility testing.
  • Familiarity with Java and Java-based backend applications.
  • Familiarity with relational databases.
  • Experience contributing to open source projects.

Education
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
