Head Machine Operator information

What is a head machine operator?

Head Machine Operators are responsible for overseeing the operation of machinery in manufacturing or production environments. They lead teams of machine operators, ensure machines are running efficiently, and troubleshoot any technical issues that arise. Their duties often include training new operators, maintaining safety standards, and coordinating maintenance schedules. Head Machine Operators play a critical role in maximizing productivity and ensuring product quality.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a head machine operator?

To excel as a Head Machine Operator, you need strong mechanical aptitude, experience with manufacturing processes, and often a high school diploma or technical certification. Familiarity with CNC machines, PLC systems, and safety protocols is typically required, alongside certifications such as OSHA safety training. Leadership, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for supervising teams and ensuring smooth operations. These skills are vital for maximizing productivity, maintaining safety standards, and minimizing downtime in manufacturing environments.

What are some common challenges faced by a head machine operator, and how can they be effectively addressed?

Head Machine Operators often encounter challenges such as troubleshooting equipment malfunctions, managing workflow disruptions, and ensuring team adherence to safety protocols. Effective communication with maintenance staff and regular preventive maintenance can minimize equipment downtime. Additionally, fostering a collaborative environment helps resolve issues quickly and ensures production targets are met safely and efficiently. Continuous training and staying updated on new machinery technologies also support smoother operations.

What is the difference between Head Machine Operator vs Machine Operator?

AspectHead Machine OperatorMachine Operator
CredentialsTypically requires certifications in machinery operation and safetyUsually needs basic machinery operation certifications
Work EnvironmentSupervises and manages machine operation in manufacturing or processing plantsOperates machinery under supervision in similar settings
ResponsibilitiesOversees machine setup, troubleshooting, and team coordinationPerforms routine machine operation tasks

The Head Machine Operator generally has additional responsibilities, including supervising other operators and ensuring safety standards, while Machine Operators focus on operating machinery efficiently. Both roles require relevant certifications and work in manufacturing environments, but the Head Machine Operator holds a more supervisory position.

Job description

Multi‑Spindle Screw Machine Reliability Technician

At RAM, we design, build, and supply precision Access (Shoulder) Plugs for Air Cooled Heat Exchangers—critical components used in refineries, petrochemical and chemical plants, power facilities, and industrial operations worldwide. Our products keep heat transfer equipment performing at its best. Your expertise will keep our production assets doing the same.

A day in this role

You start your shift walking the line of Wickman and ACME multi‑spindle screw machines—listening for changes in sound, checking lubrication, and reviewing overnight log entries. You plan preventive tasks, then jump in to diagnose a sticking slide or mis-timed cam. A quick center height tweak and fine-tune on a Reed thread rolling head have a job running to spec. Mid-morning, you assist with a changeover, calculate feeds and RPMs, and verify tooling geometry. After lunch, you document parts usage, complete a corrective repair on a gearbox, advise an operator on safe care practices, and collaborate with production on a machine upgrade idea that will boost uptime. Before you leave, you record all work, confirm safety and quality checks, and line up tomorrow’s PMs.

What you’ll own
  • Execute routine, preventive, and corrective maintenance on ACME, Wickman, and other multi‑spindle screw machines to maximize uptime and throughput.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical issues, identify root causes, and perform timely repairs—major and minor—on production machinery.
  • Operate screw machines as needed to meet production needs and validate repairs.
  • Support setups, changeovers, adjustments, center height settings, and fine‑tuning across varied part runs.
  • Inspect equipment for wear, flag risks, and recommend component replacement or enhanced PM actions.
  • Maintain accurate logs: maintenance history, repair details, and parts consumption.
  • Contribute to preventive maintenance programs and continuous improvement initiatives that raise machine reliability.
  • Assist with tooling changes, machine upgrades, and process improvements.
  • Coach operators on proper care, safe operation, and routine maintenance practices.
  • Ensure all work meets safety policies, procedures, and quality standards; own the results and conformance to specifications.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
How we work

We live our Core Values: Trust, Support, Communication, Collaboration, and Creative Solutions.

Qualifications Education
  • High School diploma or GED.
Experience
  • Minimum 5 years setting up, operating, maintaining, and repairing ACME or Wickman multi‑spindle screw machines.
  • Hands‑on troubleshooting and mechanical repair in a manufacturing environment; preventive maintenance program experience preferred.
Technical strengths
  • Mechanical troubleshooting and repair across ACME and Wickman platforms (major/minor).
  • Working knowledge of cams, gears, center height adjustments, Reed thread roll heads, and tooling setups.
  • Ability to calculate feed rates, RPMs, and geometry for setups and machining operations.
  • Sharpening and maintaining production tooling, including cut‑off blades.
  • Blueprint and mechanical drawing literacy; comfortable with tooling docs and engineering specs.
  • Proficient with micrometers, calipers, indicators, and thread gauges.
  • Familiarity with metals, alloys, machining principles, and manufacturing processes.
  • Analytical problem solver with strong attention to detail; communicates effectively and collaborates well.
  • Proven ability to work independently, prioritize, and multitask in a fast‑paced production setting.
Physical requirements
  • Ability to lift, climb, bend, stoop, push, and pull.
  • Continuous standing and/or walking.
  • Moderate physical effort—frequent handling of 10–50 lbs or continuous lighter weights.
  • Comfort working in hot, dusty, and noisy conditions.
  • Willingness to work required overtime and some weekends driven by sales demand.
