What is an HDD?

HDD technicians, also known as Horizontal Directional Drilling technicians, are professionals who operate and maintain drilling equipment used to install underground utilities such as pipes, cables, and conduits without the need for traditional trenching. They are responsible for planning drill paths, setting up drilling rigs, monitoring drilling progress, and ensuring safety standards are met. HDD technicians play a crucial role in infrastructure projects, especially in areas where surface disruption must be minimized.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an HDD operator?

To thrive as an HDD Operator, you need specialized knowledge of drilling techniques, geotechnical understanding, and typically a high school diploma or equivalent, often supplemented by technical training. Proficiency in operating HDD rigs, locating systems, and using drilling fluid management equipment is crucial, as are relevant safety certifications. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication help operators address unexpected challenges and coordinate with crew members. These skills ensure safe, efficient, and precise installation of underground utilities, minimizing environmental impact and project delays.

What are the typical challenges faced by HDD operators during a project?

HDD operators often encounter challenges such as navigating through varying soil conditions, avoiding underground utilities, and maintaining bore path accuracy. Weather and environmental factors can also impact drilling efficiency and safety. Effective communication and coordination with the project team, including surveyors and utility locators, are essential to overcoming these obstacles and ensuring a successful outcome.

What is the difference between Hdd vs Data Analyst?

AspectHddData Analyst

Common Search/ComparisonHdd vs Data Analyst

Hdd (Hard Disk Drive) professionals focus on hardware, data storage, and maintenance, often requiring technical certifications. Data Analysts interpret data, generate reports, and support decision-making, typically holding a degree in data-related fields. While both roles work with data, Hdd roles are hardware-centric, whereas Data Analysts are software and analysis-focused. Understanding these differences helps employers and job seekers find the right fit based on skills and industry needs.

Job description

Join our team as a Geotechnical Engineer in Minneapolis, MN, where you'll play a key role in solving complex underground challenges alongside a team that values both technical expertise and real collaboration. In this role, you'll be trusted to dig into problems, apply your engineering judgment, and help bring practical solutions to life on projects that shape the infrastructure around us.

You'll work on a wide range of underground and geotechnical projects, from tunnels and shafts to trenchless systems and open-cut excavations, supporting them from early investigation through design and into construction. Along the way, you'll partner closely with a multidisciplinary team of engineers, surveyors, and designers, building relationships across disciplines and contributing to a team environment where people genuinely enjoy working together.

Hybrid Work Environment: Tuesday - Thursday In-Office | Monday & Friday WFH
What You'll Do

Dig into complex underground challenges:
Apply your geotechnical expertise to analyze subsurface conditions and support the design of tunnels, shafts, trenchless systems, and open-cut excavations.

Lead and support subsurface investigations:
Help plan and participate in geotechnical investigations, including selecting boring locations, reporting soil and rock conditions, and interpreting field data.

Turn data into practical solutions:
Work with boring logs, lab data, and field observations to develop clear, defensible engineering recommendations that move projects forward with confidence.

Own your technical work:
Prepare geotechnical deliverables including data reports, interpretive reports, and other technical documentation used to support design and construction.

Stay involved in the field:
Perform site visits, construction observation, and inspections for underground structures, slopes, and related infrastructure-connecting your work directly to real-world conditions.

Support project delivery from start to finish:
Contribute across all phases of project work, including design support and construction coordination such as RFIs, submittals, and field communication.

Work closely with your team:
Collaborate with engineers, surveyors, and designers across disciplines to develop practice, well-coordinated solutions

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering (Geotechnical emphasis preferred)
  • 4 - 15 years of progressive geotechnical engineering experience
  • Experience with underground design, trenchless methods, or tunneling projects
  • Strong background in subsurface investigations, soil borings, and geotechnical report development
  • Experience with open-cut excavations, slope stability, and earthwork design
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
Advantageous Qualifications
  • Experience supporting construction-phase services, field investigations, or construction observation
  • Familiarity with trenchless construction methods such as microtunneling, HDD, or auger boring
  • Experience working in a consulting engineering environment
