The Healthcare Assistant (HCA) plays a vital role in supporting the delivery of high-quality patient care within various healthcare settings across the United States. This position involves assisting nursing and medical staff by providing direct care to patients, ensuring their comfort, safety, and well-being throughout their treatment journey. The HCA is responsible for monitoring patients' conditions, reporting changes promptly, and helping with daily living activities such as hygiene, mobility, and nutrition. By fostering a compassionate and respectful environment, the HCA contributes significantly to positive patient experiences and outcomes. Ultimately, this role is essential in bridging the gap between patients and clinical teams, ensuring seamless and effective healthcare delivery.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Completion of a recognized Healthcare Assistant or Nursing Assistant training program.
  • Certification as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) or equivalent, as required by state regulations.
  • Basic understanding of medical terminology and patient care procedures.
  • Ability to pass background checks and meet health and immunization requirements.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous experience working in a healthcare or clinical environment.
  • Additional certifications such as CPR and First Aid.
  • Familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) systems.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Bilingual abilities to support diverse patient populations.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist patients with personal care tasks including bathing, dressing, grooming, and toileting to maintain their dignity and comfort.
  • Training: Completion of 24 hours of initial pre-service training, including agency orientation and competency evaluation.
  • Ongoing Education: Minimum of 12 hours of in-service training annually, including two hours focused on dementia care.
  • Support patients with mobility needs by helping them move safely within the facility, including transferring and positioning.
  • Monitor and record vital signs such as temperature, pulse, respiration, and blood pressure, reporting any abnormalities to nursing staff.
  • Prepare patients for medical examinations and treatments, ensuring they are comfortable and informed throughout the process.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized environment by adhering to infection control protocols and assisting with the management of medical equipment.
  • Communicate effectively with patients, families, and healthcare team members to provide updates and address concerns promptly.
  • Assist with meal preparation and feeding, ensuring patients receive proper nutrition according to their care plans.

Skills:

The required skills enable the HCA to provide compassionate and effective patient care by understanding and performing essential clinical tasks accurately and safely. Communication skills are crucial for interacting with patients, families, and healthcare professionals to ensure clear information exchange and emotional support. Attention to detail and observational skills help in monitoring patient conditions and identifying any changes that require immediate attention. Preferred skills such as familiarity with EHR systems enhance the efficiency of documentation and coordination within the healthcare team. Additionally, cultural competence and language skills improve patient engagement and satisfaction by addressing diverse needs sensitively.
