Job description

DESCRIPTION:

The Grand Central Publishing Art department is seeking to hire a Junior Designer. The applicant will be working on all the imprints in the Grand Central Publishing lineup. Applicant must be mature, highly organized, efficient, conscientious, and possess the ability to multi-task. The Junior Designer will work in a highly creative, friendly and teamwork-oriented art department and will interact heavily with the creative director, art directors, designers, editorial, managing editorial, publicity, production and marketing departments to ensure timely workflow, department deadlines and interdepartmental requests.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Designing and formatting cover mechanicals (spine/back cover/flaps design) for both hardcover and paperback titles for the GCP Adult Trade list.
  • Digital formatting of audio and ebook covers.
  • Cover design assignments.
  • Designing marketing ads/materials/social media assets to support our books.
  • Digital and physical mockup of book covers.
  • Pre-press work and color corrections for jacket files going to the printer.
  • Attending weekly production meeting and weekly cover art meeting.
  • Photo / Art research.
  • Working on Reprint Corrections on backlist titles.
  • Junior Designer will be reporting to an Art Director, and an Associate Art Director
  • This is a NYC-based position. HBG's hybrid model is 3 days in-office, 2 days working from home.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES REQUIRED:
  • Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • Must have portfolio link with sample work included with resume.
  • 1-3 years of experience in an art or design department is a plus, but not necessary.
  • Background in illustration is a plus.
  • Mac platform skills with mastery of current Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign).
  • Working knowledge of AfterEffects, Animation a plus, but not necessary.
  • Strong communication skills (verbal and written) with the aptitude to communicate effectively in both individual and group settings regardless of audience.
  • Is able to work well in a team setting and creatively collaborate with others.
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to multi-task, prioritize and manage time effectively while also ensuring accuracy of work through attention to detail.

The compensation range for this position is $59,000. Salary can vary based on a number of factors including skills, experience, and location - talk with your recruiter to learn more. There may be times that you will be required (or requested) to work overtime due to the nature of your role or exceptional workload issues or special projects.
