What is a haunt actor?

A Haunt Actor is a performer who works in haunted houses, scare attractions, or seasonal events to entertain and frighten guests. They use costumes, makeup, props, and scripted or improvised scares to create a spooky atmosphere. Haunt Actors may play ghosts, zombies, monsters, or other terrifying characters, using body language, vocal effects, and sudden movements to startle visitors. The job requires stamina, creativity, and the ability to stay in character while engaging with guests.

What is a typical work environment like for a haunt actor?

Haunt Actors usually work in themed haunted attractions that can range from indoor mazes to outdoor scare zones, often operating during evenings and weekends, especially in the weeks leading up to Halloween. The environment can be physically demanding, involving long hours on your feet, performing in low light, and working with loud noises or special effects like fog. You’ll typically be part of a larger team of actors and support staff, collaborating closely to create a cohesive and immersive guest experience. Safety and communication are prioritized, and most attractions provide regular breaks and team meetings to address challenges and feedback. Working as a Haunt Actor can be a highly engaging way to develop performance skills and connect with others who have a passion for entertainment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the haunt actor position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Haunt Actor, you need strong improvisational skills, physical stamina, and the ability to stay in character, with prior acting or performance experience often preferred. Familiarity with stage makeup, costume use, and occasionally small handheld props or sound devices is helpful. Standout performers demonstrate strong teamwork, adaptability, and excellent communication, especially in high-pressure, fast-paced environments. These abilities ensure both the safety and entertainment of guests, creating a believable and engaging haunted attraction experience.

We are seeking an organized, level-headed, and experienced individual to join our team as Haunt Lead for our fall haunted attractions season. Each year during September and October, our cider mill transforms into a hub of thrilling, spine-chilling entertainment, hosting a variety of haunted experiences for guests of all ages. As Haunt Lead, you will serve as the on-site leader during operating hours - coordinating cast and crew, keeping every attraction running smoothly, and stepping in wherever you're needed most.

This is a temporary, seasonal leadership position ideal for someone with prior haunted attraction, live event, or theatrical production experience who thrives on keeping a fast-paced operation organized and safe.

  • Conduct pre-shift briefings, costume and makeup checks, and safety walkthroughs before doors open
  • Monitor scene pacing, guest flow, and overall show quality across all attractions
  • Serve as the first point of contact for staff concerns, injuries, or equipment issues during a shift
  • Step into any performer, narrator, or staff role as needed to cover call-offs or gaps
  • Enforce all safety protocols, guest-interaction boundaries, and emergency procedures
  • Communicate real-time updates and issues to the Haunt Manager
  • Assist with opening and closing procedures for haunted attraction zones
  • Support the training of new cast and crew members alongside the Haunt Manager
  • Complete shift reports and incident documentation as needed

  • Prior experience in a haunted attraction, live event, or theatrical production setting preferred
  • Demonstrated leadership, organizational, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to remain calm and make quick decisions in a high-energy, fast-paced environment
  • Strong communication skills to coordinate across cast, crew, and management
  • Comfortable providing direction and feedback to staff
  • Ability to commit to the full September-October season, including all Friday, Saturday, and Sunday evenings, plus pre-season setup and training days
  • Reliable, punctual, and professional - attendance is critical to our team's success
  • Physically able to walk extensively across the property and remain on your feet for the full shift duration

Working Conditions

  • Ability to work outdoors and in indoor haunted environments in varying weather conditions
  • Ability to move continuously between attractions and remain on your feet for multiple hours per shift
  • Tolerance for strobe lights, fog machines, loud sound effects, and other special effects
  • Comfort resolving issues and making decisions in high-energy, fast-paced, guest-facing situations

Availability Requirements

Candidates must be available to work every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday evening throughout the entire September and October season, and should expect shifts to run from early evening through late-night hours.
