A Harness Design job involves designing, developing, and documenting electrical wiring harnesses used in vehicles, aircraft, machinery, or other electrical systems. Engineers in this role create schematics, select appropriate wiring, connectors, and protective components, and ensure compliance with industry standards. They collaborate with mechanical and electrical teams to integrate harnesses into the overall system efficiently. Additionally, they may use CAD software like AutoCAD, CATIA, or Capital Harness for design and simulation.

What does a harness design do?

A typical day in Harness Design involves creating and reviewing harness layouts, collaborating with electrical and mechanical engineers to ensure proper integration within larger systems, and updating technical documentation. You’ll spend significant time working with CAD software, answering design queries, and participating in meetings to resolve engineering challenges. Many roles also require you to coordinate with manufacturing teams to address assembly concerns or support prototype builds. This dynamic environment provides constant opportunities for problem-solving and learning, especially as project requirements or industry standards evolve.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in harness design?

To excel in Harness Design, you need expertise in electrical and mechanical engineering principles, proficiency in CAD software, and a strong understanding of wiring standards, often backed by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with industry-specific design tools such as AutoCAD Electrical, CATIA, or Capital Harness and certifications like IPC/WHMA-A-620 are highly valued.
