What is a hardware job?

Hardware jobs involve the design, development, testing, and maintenance of physical computer components and electronic devices. Professionals in this field work with items such as circuit boards, processors, memory devices, networks, and other peripherals. Roles may include hardware engineers, technicians, quality assurance testers, and support specialists. These jobs play a critical role in ensuring computers and electronic systems function efficiently and reliably. They often collaborate with software teams to integrate and optimize system performance.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a hardware engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Hardware Engineer, you need a strong background in electrical engineering, circuit design, and hardware troubleshooting, usually supported by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with CAD tools, PCB design software, and hardware testing equipment is essential, and certifications like Certified Hardware Engineer (CHE) can be beneficial. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective teamwork help individuals excel in this role. These skills are vital for designing reliable hardware solutions, ensuring product quality, and collaborating efficiently with cross-functional teams.

What are some common challenges faced by hardware engineers in cross-functional teams, and how can they be addressed?

Hardware engineers often work closely with software developers, product managers, and manufacturing teams, which can present challenges such as communication gaps and differing project priorities. To address these issues, hardware engineers should prioritize clear documentation, regular status updates, and active participation in cross-functional meetings. Building strong relationships and understanding the constraints of other teams also helps streamline workflows and resolve potential bottlenecks quickly. Emphasizing collaboration ensures that all team members are aligned and project goals are met efficiently.

Hardware technicians focus on installing, repairing, and maintaining physical computer components like motherboards, hard drives, and peripherals. Network technicians specialize in configuring, troubleshooting, and maintaining network systems and connectivity. While both roles work within IT environments, hardware technicians handle physical devices, whereas network technicians manage network infrastructure and connectivity issues.

How to get a hardware job?

To get a hardware job, candidates should develop technical skills in electronics, computer architecture, or related fields, often through a degree or certifications such as CompTIA or Cisco. Gaining hands-on experience through internships, lab work, or personal projects can improve employability. Familiarity with tools like soldering, testing equipment, and understanding manufacturing processes is also beneficial.

Position Title: Hardware Engineer
Department: Inverter Firmware
Compensation: $87,000 - $135,000 + annual bonus
Reports To: Director of Digital Inverter Firmware
Location: Kitchener, ON (onsite)

Who We Are

CS Digital is a digital technology startup focused on providing state-of-the-art digital technology for power solutions. Our first goal is to build a North American based inverter control board, firmware and energy station controller for the BESS industry to compliment Canadian Solar's String Power Conversion System Medium Voltage Skid for the Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) industry.

About the Role:

The PCB Designer / Hardware Engineer is responsible for the schematic design, PCB layout, and documentation of highreliability electronic hardware used in inverters, batteries, and energy storage systems. This role requires handson experience across the full hardware design lifecycle, from schematic capture and component selection through layout, prototype bringup, and production release.

You will work closely with power electronics, firmware, FPGA, systems, and mechanical teams to deliver robust, certifiable, and manufacturable hardware for utilityscale BESS applications.

Responsibilities:

  • Translate systemlevel, functional, and regulatory requirements into complete and welldocumented schematic designs.
  • Design and develop electrical schematics for inverter control boards, power interface boards, sensing circuits, communication interfaces, and auxiliary hardware.
  • Perform component selection for digital, mixedsignal, and powerrelated circuits, considering performance, availability, reliability, and cost.
  • Define hardware architecture and electrical interfaces between PCBs, power stages, FPGA/DSP/MCUs, sensors, and external systems.
  • Design multilayer PCB layouts for energy storage and inverter applications.
  • Perform component placement and routing for high-speed signal, mixedsignal, highpower, and highvoltage designs, ensuring optimal signal integrity, EMI/EMC, and thermal performance.
  • Apply best practices and standard compliance (UL, IEC) for creepage, clearance, isolation barriers, grounding, and shielding.
  • Prepare and maintain complete manufacturing deliverables, including schematic packages, PCB layouts, stackups, Gerbers, BOMs, pickandplace files, and assembly drawings.
  • Support prototype bringup, board testing, debugging, and rootcause analysis in the lab.
  • Participate in design reviews and incorporate feedback to improve reliability, manufacturability, and cost.
  • Support ECOs, costdown activities, supplier coordination, and field issue investigations during the product lifecycle.

Required Qualifications and Skills:

  • Diploma or Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronic Engineering Technology, or a related discipline.
  • 5+ years of professional experience in schematic design and PCB layout for embedded systems, power electronics, or industrial equipment.
  • Demonstrated experience designing hardware for power converters, or other highreliability electronic systems.
  • Experience supporting designs subject to safety and regulatory standards such as UL, IEC, or equivalent certifications.
  • Handson experience supporting prototype builds, lab validation, and production release.
  • Strong analytical, problemsolving, documentation, and technical communication skills.
  • Solid understanding of power supply design, signal conditioning, isolation techniques, and protection circuitry.
  • Ability to read, create, and review complex schematics and PCB layout with attention to safety, robustness, and certifiability
  • Strong experience designing schematics for digital, mixedsignal, and power electronics systems.
  • Strong understanding of signal integrity, EMI/EMC, creepage, and clearance requirements.
  • Experience with professional PCB CAD tools such as Altium Designer, Cadence Allegro, or equivalent.
  • Capability to create and manage schematic symbols, footprints, and PCB libraries.
  • Experience working in crossfunctional engineering teams across hardware, firmware, FPGA, and mechanical disciplines.
  • Familiarity with version control, ECO processes, and structured hardware release workflows.
  • Experience working in crossfunctional engineering teams across hardware, firmware, FPGA, and mechanical disciplines
  • Strong documentation discipline and attention to detail.
