Hardware Quality Engineer information

What is a hardware quality engineer?

Hardware Quality Engineers are professionals who ensure that electronic hardware products meet specified standards of quality and reliability. They develop and implement testing procedures, identify defects, and work closely with design, manufacturing, and production teams to resolve issues. Their responsibilities also include analyzing failure data, managing quality documentation, and ensuring compliance with industry regulations. By maintaining high quality standards, they help prevent costly recalls and improve customer satisfaction.

What are some common challenges hardware quality engineers face when working on new product launches?

Hardware Quality Engineers often encounter challenges such as aligning quality standards with fast-paced product development timelines, identifying potential defects early in the design process, and coordinating effectively with cross-functional teams like design, manufacturing, and supply chain. Ensuring that all components meet rigorous reliability and safety standards while adapting to design changes can be demanding. Strong communication skills and proactive problem-solving are essential for navigating these challenges and ensuring successful product launches.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a hardware quality engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Hardware Quality Engineer, you need expertise in hardware testing, quality assurance methodologies, and a relevant engineering degree such as electrical or mechanical engineering. Familiarity with tools like oscilloscopes, signal analyzers, statistical analysis software, and certifications such as Six Sigma or ISO 9001 are highly valuable. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you identify issues and collaborate with cross-functional teams. These skills and qualities ensure reliable hardware products by minimizing defects and maintaining high standards throughout the development lifecycle.

What is the difference between Hardware Quality Engineer vs Hardware Test Engineer?

AspectHardware Quality EngineerHardware Test Engineer
Primary FocusEnsuring overall hardware quality, compliance, and reliability throughout developmentDesigning and executing tests to identify hardware defects
ResponsibilitiesQuality assurance processes, audits, supplier quality, documentationTest planning, test case execution, defect reporting
CertificationsISO standards, Six Sigma, relevant industry certificationsTesting certifications like ISTQB (if applicable)
Work EnvironmentCross-functional teams, manufacturing, quality assurance labsTesting labs, development teams, validation environments

Hardware Quality Engineers focus on maintaining overall hardware quality and compliance, overseeing processes and standards. Hardware Test Engineers concentrate on executing tests to detect hardware issues. Both roles are essential in hardware development but differ in scope and responsibilities.

Job description

Why LeoLabs?

At LeoLabs, we're building theย living map of activity in space.ย Through our proprietary global radar network and AI-enabled analytics platform, we collect millions of measurements daily on more than 25,000 objects in low Earth orbit (LEO).ย Our radar-powered intelligence protects billions in assets, monitors adversarial behavior, and ensures safe operations for commercial and government missions.

We're not just building technology, we areย redefining global security, safety, and transparency in space. As orbital activity accelerates and threats grow more complex, LeoLabs is aย trusted partner for Space Domain Awareness, Space Traffic Management, and Satellite Operations for top-tier space operators and allied defense organizations.

If you're looking to work on mission-critical challenges at the forefront of aerospace, national security, and AI, your impact starts here.

As a Hardware Quality Engineer, you will help ensure the hardware we build meets the highest standards of quality, reliability, and manufacturability. You will work across engineering, manufacturing, supply chain, and external suppliers to develop scalable quality processes, investigate failures, and drive continuous improvement throughout the hardware lifecycle. This is a hands-on role for an engineer who enjoys solving problems, improving processes, and helping teams build better hardware.ย

You will support quality initiatives across printed circuit board assemblies, electromechanical systems, cable assemblies, machined components, and structural hardware. This is a full-time, onsite position based in Menlo Park, California.ย

You will be responsible for:ย

  • Develop and maintain quality processes for electronic and electromechanical hardware throughout the product lifecycleย
  • Perform incoming, in-process, and final quality inspections for PCBAs, cable assemblies, machined components, and structural hardwareย
  • Lead root cause investigations for manufacturing defects, supplier issues, and field failures using structured problem-solving methodologiesย
  • Drive corrective and preventive actions (CAPA) and verify their effectivenessย
  • Partner with engineering, manufacturing, supply chain, and suppliers to improve product quality and manufacturabilityย
  • Define quality metrics, analyze trends, and communicate performance to engineering and leadershipย
  • Develop inspection plans, acceptance criteria, and quality documentation for new productsย
  • Support supplier qualification, audits, and first article inspectionsย
  • Help maintain and improve quality management systems and ensure compliance with applicable industry standardsย

Qualificationsย

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, or a related technical fieldย
  • 5+ years of experience in hardware quality assurance or quality engineeringย
  • Experience supporting PCBAs, electronic assemblies, and electromechanical products in a manufacturing environmentย
  • Strong understanding of root cause analysis and corrective action methodologiesย
  • Experience interpreting engineering drawings, schematics, bills of materials, and manufacturing documentationย
  • Experience using quality data to drive process improvements and reduce defectsย
  • Familiarity with Arena or another PLM system, NetSuite or another ERP system, and Altium Designerย
  • Must be eligible to obtain and maintain a U.S. personnel security clearanceย

Preferred Qualificationsย

  • Experience with ISO 9001, AS9100, or other quality management systemsย
  • Experience working with contract manufacturers and supplier quality programsย
  • Familiarity with SolidWorks and mechanical drawingsย
  • Experience performing first article inspections and managing nonconforming materialย
  • IPC certification or experience applying IPC workmanship standardsย
  • Experience supporting aerospace, defense, robotics, or other high-reliability hardware productsย

Within 1 month, you'll:ย

  • Complete onboarding and become familiar with LeoLabs' products, manufacturing processes, and quality systemsย
  • Learn our current production workflows, suppliers, and inspection requirementsย
  • Begin supporting hardware inspections and ongoing quality initiativesย

Within 3 months, you'll:ย

  • Take ownership of quality activities for active hardware buildsย
  • Lead investigations into manufacturing and supplier quality issuesย
  • Begin implementing improvements to inspection processes and quality documentationย

Within 6 months, you'll:ย

  • Establish meaningful quality metrics and reporting that drive engineering and manufacturing decisionsย
