What does a hardware QA analyst do?

A Hardware QA Analyst is responsible for testing and evaluating computer hardware, components, and related systems to ensure they meet quality standards and function correctly. They design and execute test plans, identify defects or issues, and work closely with engineers to resolve problems. Their role is crucial in ensuring that hardware products are reliable, safe, and ready for market release.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a hardware QA analyst, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Hardware QA Analyst, you need a strong understanding of hardware systems, test methodologies, and quality assurance processes, often supported by a degree in engineering or computer science. Familiarity with test automation tools, diagnostic software, and bug tracking systems is typically required, along with certifications like ISTQB being advantageous. Attention to detail, analytical thinking, and effective communication are essential soft skills for identifying issues and collaborating with cross-functional teams. These abilities ensure that hardware products meet quality standards, function reliably, and reach the market with minimal defects.

Job description

 About Us

OLR is an award-winning Oracle Retail Partner with over 20 years of experience delivering and supporting Oracle Retail solutions for international omnichannel retailers and some of the world’s most recognized brands.

OLR USA is a key part of OLR’s global operations, supporting clients across North America and internationally.   While most of our U.S. team works remotely across the country, OLR maintains its headquarters office in Cleveland, Ohio. This is also home to one of OLR’s data centers and a critical component of our global technology and support infrastructure.

OLR operates with a distributed workforce model across the United States, allowing team members to work remotely from various locations. Employees based near the Cleveland office benefit from the flexibility of a hybrid work environment, combining in-office collaboration with remote work.

Our U.S. based professionals collaborate closely with teams in Europe, India, and Latin America, contributing to Oracle Retail systems integration, cloud and data initiatives, and continuous improvement programs for global retail operations.

The Role

The QA Analyst plays a key role in ensuring the quality, reliability, and performance of POS and e-commerce applications. Working within a cross-functional Agile team of developers, product managers, and QA specialists, this role is responsible for executing both manual and automated testing, contributing to test strategy, defect management and continuous improvement of QA processes.

The QA Analyst collaborates closely with development and business teams to validate retail systems, integrations and store solutions, ensuring high-quality software releases that support business operations.

In addition to software testing responsibilities, this role will support maintenance and organization of the office retail lab environment, ensuring hardware systems, POS equipment, and testing environments are properly configured and available to support project testing needs.

This role is ideal for someone who wants to take ownership of QA activities, apply testing best practices and expand expertise across retail platforms, POS systems and modern testing. You are a highly motivated self-starter who enjoys solving problems, communicating clearly, and collaborating effectively with others across a variety of project environments.

This is an on-site role based in our office, as it requires regular hands-on access to the lab, hardware and other testing equipment that cannot be effectively supported in a remote environment.

In this role, you’ll

  • Plan, design, and execute manual and automated testing for Oracle Retail and Jumpmind retail applications, ensuring software quality through functional, integration, regression, and end-to-end testing.
  • Perform functional, regression, integration, performance and security testing across multiple systems and environments.
  • Validate retail business workflows, system integrations, and end-to-end transaction processes.
  • Identify, document, and track defects using tools such as Jira, collaborating closely with developers to ensure timely resolution.
  • Contribute to test strategy development, test planning, and QA process improvements.
  • Perform manual and automated testing and work with version control systems to support test execution, software releases, and continuous delivery.
  • Prepare test reports, quality metrics, and release readiness assessments for project teams and stakeholders.
  • Support end-to-end system validation, including integration with retail backend systems and external services.
  • Assist with test automation initiatives, identifying opportunities to improve test efficiency and coverage.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure consistent quality standards across retail applications and digital platforms.
  • Contribute to knowledge sharing and QA best practices within the team.
  • Maintain and support the office retail lab environment, including POS systems, peripherals, and testing hardware used for QA validation.
  • Assist with lab setup, hardware configuration, and troubleshooting of retail equipment to support testing activities.
  • Ensure lab systems are properly maintained and available for internal teams and remote testing support when needed.
  • Provide hands-on support for remote teams requiring physical access to lab systems or hardware.
  • Willing and able to travel to customer sites, both domestically and internationally, to support project implementations, testing, and customer engagements.

Experience & Qualifications

  • Experience with Oracle Retail Xstore or similar Point-of-Sale (POS) systems.
  • 2+ years of experience in Quality Assurance or software testing, including both manual and automated testing.
  • Solid understanding of Agile & Waterfall methodologies.
  • Experience using defect tracking and test management tools, such as Jira.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills when working with cross-functional teams.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple testing activities within fast-paced project environments.
  • Working knowledge of relational databases such as SQL Server and Oracle databases, with the ability to write and analyze SQL queries to validate test data, verify transactions, and troubleshoot system issues during testing.

Preferred Experience

  • A good level of written and spoken English is essential, and Spanish language skills would be a significant advantage, particularly when supporting customers and collaborating with teams across LATAM region.
  • ISEB/ISTQB Foundation or Advanced QA certification.
  • Knowledge of performance, security, and accessibility testing best practices.
  • Experience with test management, defect tracking, and automation tools (e.g., Jira, Xunit, Test Evolve, or similar platforms) is a plus.
