Hardware Project Manager information

What does a hardware project manager do?

A Hardware Project Manager oversees the planning, development, and execution of hardware projects, ensuring they are completed on time, within budget, and according to specified requirements. They coordinate cross-functional teams including engineers, designers, and suppliers, manage project timelines, and mitigate risks throughout the project lifecycle. Their responsibilities also include communicating progress to stakeholders, resolving issues as they arise, and ensuring that final hardware products meet quality standards.

What are the typical challenges a hardware project manager faces when coordinating cross-functional teams?

Hardware Project Managers often encounter challenges in aligning the schedules and priorities of diverse teams such as engineering, manufacturing, procurement, and quality assurance. A key difficulty is managing dependencies and ensuring clear communication, as delays in one area can impact the entire project timeline. Additionally, balancing technical requirements with resource constraints and adapting to unexpected changes in component availability or design can require quick problem-solving and strong leadership. Building strong relationships and fostering collaboration across departments are essential for successful project delivery.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a hardware project manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Hardware Project Manager, you need a solid background in engineering or technical fields, experience with product development cycles, and strong project management expertise, often supported by a relevant degree and PMP or similar certification. Familiarity with project management tools (like MS Project or Jira), CAD software, and manufacturing process systems is typically required. Exceptional leadership, organizational skills, and effective communication help manage cross-functional teams and stakeholders. These skills are crucial for delivering hardware projects on time, within budget, and to specification while navigating complex technical and logistical challenges.

Job description

Hardware Integration Engineer                                                                                                                                    Waterloo, Ontario

Your Opportunity at VueReal

We support innovation and are one of the few businesses able to design and produce Micro-LEDs

We are looking for a Hardware Integration Engineer to join our Engineering Team in Waterloo, Ontario.

VueReal is revolutionizing the field of optoelectronics with cutting-edge micro semiconductor technologies. We are seeking a mid-level Hardware Integration Engineer, who not only possesses strong technical skills but also shows a clear potential for leadership and technical management.

In this role, you will take ownership of system-level hardware integration activities, coordinating mechanical, hardware/electrical, optical, and software elements into cohesive solutions. You will guide junior team members, drive project execution, and influence hardware strategy and architecture. This position is a stepping stone toward becoming a Technical Lead or Engineering Manager within VueReal’s expanding engineering team.

YOUR Day-to-day Activities

  • Lead the integration of hardware subsystems — mechanical, hardware/electrical, and optical — into cohesive and high-performance platforms.
  • Own system integration activities from early-stage design through to validation and deployment, managing timelines, risks, and deliverables.
  • Develop and enforce hardware interface standards, integration protocols, and system validation methodologies.
  • Collaborate strategically with mechanical, hardware/electrical, software, and manufacturing teams to ensure seamless system operation.
  • Mentor and support junior engineers and technicians, building technical competencies and promoting best practices.
  • Analyze and troubleshoot complex system-level issues, proposing robust and scalable solutions.
  • Interface with stakeholders, including external partners and internal leadership, delivering technical reports and integration plans.
  • Contribute to technical roadmaps, aligning system integration strategies with organizational goals and future product visions.

The TOOLS YOU need to do the job

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Mechatronics, Engineering Physics, or related field; Master’s degree or management coursework is an asset.
  • 5-10 years of experience in hardware integration, system engineering, or multidisciplinary hardware development.
  • Strong expertise in hardware debugging, system validation, and cross-domain integration (e.g., optics, hardware/electronics, mechanics).
  • Proven leadership in technical projects: managing integration activities, mentoring junior team members, or owning system deliverables.
  • Project management familiarity in the areas of planning, scheduling, risk assessment, and issue resolution.
  • Working knowledge of controls systems and embedded software development.
  • Familiarity with precision instruments, sensors, control systems, and embedded systems integration.
  • Excellent troubleshooting, communication, and documentation skills.
  • Bonus: Experience in display technologies, semiconductor processes, or cleanroom environments.
  • Proven analytical and problem-solving skills.

 WHY VueReal

  • A fun, collaborative, and creative environment with a culture cultivating inclusiveness, fairness, and transparency.
  • Open concept office
  • A chance to grow with the team.
  • A startup backed by major industry players.
  • A clear roadmap for the successful adoption of the technology (The team has developed critical enabling technologies for micro-LED displays during the past two years, and is working on integrating the technologies in products during the next two years)

Who WE are:

Our mission is to make a sustainable and brighter life experience. We enable new, innovative, and enriching products by a sustainable pixel fabrication process. The pixel is our technology canvas and we create new functions by printing different microdevices in the pixels (e.g. sensors, emissive devices, mems, actuators, circuits, etc).

We make literally everything in house. The field includes a crazy amount of optics, physics, chemistry, material, semiconductor, system, application, automation, image processing, AI, and more. The operation and business side covers dealing with different vendors (materials, tools, components, process, etc.), handling different facilities, international business development, complex project management, and more. It is a candy store for people who have the tenacity to learn complex topics and solve multi-dimensional problems and create something bigger than themselves.

We take a huge pride in our team and its achievements such as being the first team to make 7000 ppi microLED array and top it by 30000 ppi, the first team making a true printing microLED solution, being named one of the top ten Scale-up companies in Canada 2019, the first and only North American company to build displays, commercializing microLED displays, and even more that we cannot talk about publicly.

Our office is arranged upon three main factors: collaboration, fun, and innovation. It is a beautiful open concept, with a game, meditation, relaxation, and fun meeting rooms, and eight different labs and cleanrooms.
