Hardware Program Manager information

What is a hardware program manager?

Hardware Program Managers are professionals responsible for overseeing the planning, development, and execution of hardware projects within an organization. They coordinate cross-functional teams, manage schedules, budgets, and resources, and ensure that hardware products are delivered on time and meet quality standards. Their role often involves risk management, stakeholder communication, and problem-solving throughout the product lifecycle. Hardware Program Managers act as the primary point of contact between engineering, manufacturing, and other departments to ensure project success.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a hardware program manager?

To thrive as a Hardware Program Manager, you need strong project management skills, a solid understanding of hardware development processes, and typically a degree in engineering or a related field. Familiarity with tools like Microsoft Project, Jira, and CAD software, as well as certifications such as PMP, are often expected. Exceptional communication, leadership, and problem-solving abilities help you coordinate cross-functional teams and resolve issues effectively. These skills are crucial for delivering complex hardware products on time, within budget, and to quality standards.

What are some common challenges faced by hardware program managers during product development cycles?

Hardware Program Managers often navigate challenges such as coordinating cross-functional teams, managing tight schedules, and handling unexpected supply chain disruptions. They must balance technical requirements with budget and timeline constraints, ensuring all stakeholders stay aligned throughout the project. Proactive risk management and strong communication skills are essential for successfully guiding products from design through manufacturing and launch.

Job description

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Technical Program Manager, Lab & Hardware Tracking is the R&D-side point of coordination for DDN's lab consolidation initiative and for hardware build support across engineering programs โ€” keeping consolidation moving without disrupting active R&D work, and making sure engineering has the builds, systems, and lab capacity it needs, when it needs them.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Lab Consolidation Coordination

  • Coordinate the lab consolidation initiative end to end โ€” sequencing site moves, equipment migration, and decommissioning across teams

  • Partner with facilities, IT, and hardware engineering on the consolidated lab layout (power, rack space, network) and migration timeline

  • Track milestones, dependencies, and risks; escalating blockers that threaten program timelines or R&D continuity

R&D Build Support

  • Serve as the R&D-side point of coordination for hardware build requests, ensuring engineering has the systems, prototypes, and test equipment it needs

  • Track build status and dependencies, proactively flagging risks to program milestones

  • Prioritize and sequence competing build and lab requests against program urgency and lab capacity

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • 8โ€“12 years of experience in technical program management, hardware program management, or lab/data center operations โ€” including a lab move, consolidation, or facility transition

  • Demonstrated experience coordinating hardware build schedules and dependencies with engineering, manufacturing, and supply chain teams

  • Strong cross-functional coordination skills; comfortable running a multi-workstream plan with competing priorities and hard deadlines

  • Experience tracking physical hardware assets/inventory at scale, including through relocation or reconciliation efforts

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; able to synthesize status for engineering leadership

  • Bachelor's degree in a technical field or equivalent practical experience

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Direct experience leading or supporting a lab consolidation, relocation, or data center/facility migration

  • Background in enterprise storage, networking, servers, or HPC/AI infrastructure hardware

  • PMP or equivalent program/project management certification
