Spectrum Internship Experience

This is a paid, full-time, 11-week internship designed to give you real-world experience and meaningful exposure to the telecommunications industry in your chosen field.

Internship program runs from May 26 through August 6, 2027.

In addition to role-specific projects, you'll take part in professional development sessions, networking opportunities, mentorship and experiences that help you grow personally and professionally.

Responsibilities

What you can expect in this role

As a Spectrum intern, you'll spend the summer working alongside two teams: your respective department and your intern cohort.

Department and team-focused projects account for about 80% of your schedule. You'll spend the other 20% on internship experiences that include a kickoff conference, professional development sessions and networking activities, webinars, community service, cross-functional projects and final presentations.

This experience is designed to help you explore your interests, expand your network and leave with a deeper understanding of both your field and the impact of our business.

Internship responsibilities may include:

  • The Intern provides hands-on support to the CPE Hardware Parametric team across three core areas: (1) Certification of Customer Premise Equipment (CPE), (2) Hardware Lab Development, and (3) Field Issue Investigation. The intern will own key deliverables including hardware teardown analysis and Small Network Equipment (SNE) Voluntary Agreement compliance testing, while assisting with vendor test report auditing, in-house lab measurements, ad hoc testing for cross-functional partners, and new lab equipment process development. This position supports the team's mission to ensure Charter's networking hardware — including WiFi, DOCSIS, Fiber, power supply (PSU), and battery backup unit (BBU) devices — meets safety, electrical, reliability, environmental, and regulatory standards. The intern will gain direct experience with electrical engineering and RF lab equipment, technical standards compliance, hardware analysis techniques, and the CPE hardware development lifecycle within a collaborative engineering environment.
  • 1. Hardware Certification: Assist with Certifying new Customer Premise Equipment (CPE) platforms and supply-critical CPE hardware revisions through auditing vendor testing — spanning thermal stress, electrical surge and immunity, RF interference, power supply integrity, environmental endurance, and reliability — for WiFi, DOCSIS, Fiber, PSU, and BBU CPE. Drive Small Network Equipment (SNE) Voluntary Agreement power consumption testing, data collection, and compliance reporting. Complete hardware teardown assessments including visual inspection, PCB photography, BOM verification, and documentation of manufacturing quality observations. Perform in-house lab measurements using electrical engineering and RF test equipment (oscilloscope, multimeter, power sources, thermal camera, digital microscope, vector network analyzers, spectrum analyzers), document results, and supplement findings to support the team's certification audit work. Participate in witness testing sessions as needed to observe, record, and verify vendor test execution and results. Support ad hoc testing and analysis requests from cross-functional partners (Product, Supply Chain, Procurement, Industrial Design/Mechanical Engineering) — ranging from hardware spec inquiries to investigating unexpected device behavior.
  • 2. Hardware Lab Development: As new testing equipment becomes available, support commissioning, operation, and validation of that equipment. Help develop standard operating procedures, usage documentation, and maintenance processes for any newly acquired lab capabilities. Assist with establishing repeatable test workflows and templates for in-house testing.
  • 3. Field Issue Investigation: Assist with investigating, diagnosing, and remediating Customer Premise Equipment (CPE) field issues escalated to the team. Gather data through visual inspections, lab measurements, and hardware teardown to support root cause analysis. Document findings clearly and concisely for team review and leadership updates.
Qualifications

Required qualifications

  • Must be a rising senior with an expected graduation date between December 2027 and May 2028
  • Must be currently enrolled in an accredited College or University completing a bachelor's degree
  • Must have at least a 3.0 GPA or greater in current program
  • Ability to travel locally to Spectrum intern development events and activities throughout the program
  • Authorization to work in the U.S. without restrictions or need for future sponsorship

Preferred Qualifications

  • Foundational knowledge of basic electrical, RF, and mechanical parameters (voltage, current, power, frequency, SNR, return/insertion Loss, RSSI, temperature).
  • Familiarity with electrical engineering and RF test equipment (oscilloscope, multimeter, power sources, thermal camera, digital microscope, vector network analyzers, spectrum analyzers).
  • Ability to read and interpret technical documentation and testing standards.
  • Familiarity with reading and analyzing hardware schematics.
  • Basic understanding of networking hardware concepts (WiFi routers, DOCSIS modems, fiber ONUs, power supplies, battery backup units).
  • Comfortable with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) for documentation and data organization.
  • Familiarity with basic Linux commands.
  • Strong attention to detail, particularly for procedural, inspection, and repetitive tasks.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to translate technical findings into concise updates for cross-functional partners and leadership.
