Controls Engineer - Hardware Design

Haumiller Engineering is a 100% employee-owned company that designs and manufactures automation assembly and test equipment for the life science, personal care and food and beverage industries.

Haumiller Engineering has an exciting opportunity for a Controls Engineer in our Belvidere, IL facility. The Controls Engineer is responsible for developing and maintaining electrical and pneumatic designs for automated assembly and testing equipment that meet the objectives of the concept and mechanical design specifications. This position requires a minimum of 6 years' experience in Controls Engineering with experience designing electrical panels and pneumatics.

This position is 100% onsite and based in our Belvidere, IL facility. Depending on workload, this position may require occasional travel to work at our South Elgin, IL location. Travel up to 10%.

What You Will Do:

• Analyze design requirements and develop electrical schematics, pneumatic diagrams, and bills of material (BOMs).

• Create clear, cost-effective electrical and pneumatic designs that meet customer performance, quality, cost, and delivery expectations.

• Generate complete and accurate documentation to support manufacturing and field integration, including detailed drawings and schematics.

• Identify and recommend improvements to tools, processes, and workflows to reduce design errors and improve efficiency.

• Perform electrical rework on existing systems and support machine builders with troubleshooting and technical questions.

• Review and check peer hardware designs for accuracy, cost optimization, and standardization opportunities.

• Inspect completed machinery to ensure compliance with NEC, NFPA, UL, CE, and applicable industry standards.

• Utilize ERP systems to create and maintain BOMs, generate work orders, build routers, and release materials to purchasing.

• Modify electrical schematics and BOMs to support field changes, retrofits, and continuous improvement efforts.

• Select electrical and pneumatic components that align with machine functionality, safety requirements, and budget constraints.

• Design machine safety circuits in accordance with risk assessments and applicable safety standards.


What You Will Bring:

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering OR equivalent combination of education and hands-on experience in automation or industrial machinery

• Minimum of 6 years of experience focused on hardware design for industrial controls systems.

• Strong experience with AutoCAD Electrical or SolidWorks Electrical for schematic development and panel design.

• Proficiency in developing one-line diagrams, control schematics, and panel layouts.

• Working knowledge of electrical and machinery standards, including: NFPA 79, NEC, UL 508A, ISO 12100 and related safety standards

• Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings and 3D CAD models.

• Strong attention to detail with a focus on reducing errors, minimizing rework, and improving overall design quality.

• Practical understanding of component selection, panel layout, and real-world build considerations (not just theoretical design).

• Strong communication skills to collaborate with mechanical engineers, machine builders, and project teams.
