How much do hardware cryptography embedded jobs pay per year?

As of Jun 6, 2026, the average yearly pay for hardware cryptography embedded in the United States is $130,047.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $100,500.00 and $156,500.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is the difference between Hardware Cryptography Embedded vs Hardware Security Engineer?

AspectHardware Cryptography EmbeddedHardware Security Engineer
CredentialsCryptography certifications, embedded systems experienceSecurity certifications, hardware security knowledge
Work EnvironmentEmbedded device development, firmware programmingSecurity assessments, hardware testing
Industry UsageConsumer electronics, IoT devicesFinancial, defense, enterprise hardware

Hardware Cryptography Embedded focuses on implementing cryptographic algorithms within embedded systems, often requiring knowledge of embedded programming and cryptography certifications. Hardware Security Engineers work on securing hardware components, performing security assessments, and mitigating vulnerabilities. While both roles involve hardware security, the former emphasizes cryptographic integration in embedded devices, whereas the latter covers broader hardware security measures across various industries.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Hardware Cryptography Embedded Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Hardware Cryptography Embedded Engineer, you need expertise in embedded systems, cryptographic algorithms, and hardware/software integration, typically with a degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or a related field. Familiarity with tools like HDL (VHDL/Verilog), FPGA/ASIC design environments, and security certification standards (e.g., FIPS 140-2/3, Common Criteria) is common. Strong problem-solving, detail orientation, and collaborative communication skills set outstanding candidates apart. These skills are crucial to ensuring robust, efficient, and secure cryptographic hardware solutions in highly sensitive applications.

What are hardware cryptography embedded engineers?

Hardware cryptography embedded engineers are professionals who design, implement, and test cryptographic algorithms and protocols directly in hardware devices, such as microcontrollers, FPGAs, or ASICs. Their work focuses on ensuring secure data transmission and storage by integrating encryption, decryption, and authentication functions into embedded systems. These engineers need a strong understanding of both cryptography principles and hardware design, often working closely with software and security teams to protect sensitive information in applications like smart cards, IoT devices, and secure communications.

What are the typical collaboration points between a Hardware Cryptography Embedded engineer and other teams during product development?

As a Hardware Cryptography Embedded engineer, you will frequently collaborate with software developers, security analysts, and hardware design teams. You'll work closely with software teams to ensure secure integration of cryptographic modules into embedded systems, and coordinate with security experts to validate threat models and compliance requirements. Additionally, hardware engineers rely on your expertise to implement robust, efficient cryptographic algorithms in silicon or firmware, often requiring regular cross-functional meetings and design reviews. These collaborations are essential for delivering secure and reliable products that meet industry standards.
