What does a harbour master do?

A Harbour Master is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of a port or harbour. Their duties include overseeing vessel movements, enforcing port regulations, coordinating with shipping agents and authorities, and ensuring the safety of personnel and the environment. They may also manage port facilities, respond to emergencies, and supervise harbour staff. The Harbour Master plays a crucial role in maintaining smooth maritime operations and ensuring compliance with local and international laws.

To thrive as a Harbour Master, you need in-depth knowledge of maritime operations, navigation, and port regulations, usually backed by a maritime or nautical qualification and relevant licenses. Familiarity with vessel traffic management systems, port security protocols, and emergency response tools is essential.
