Job description

Hershey Outpatient Surgery Center (HOSC) is currently seeking a dynamic and highly motivated Certified Surgical Technologist to join our team.

Eligible for a Sign-on Bonus, up to $5k

Service lines include orthopedics, urology, ophthalmology, pain management, ENT, GYN, General Surgery, and Plastic Surgery. Additionally, we perform pediatric surgery on patients ranging in age from 6 months to 17 years of age. The majority of our surgeons are part of the Pennsylvania State Health System, and are all Academic Professors of Medicine in their unique fields, so the right candidate should take a high interest in assisting our attending surgeons in the training of our multiple Fellows, Surgical Residents and Medical Students in an academic teaching environment.

The leadership of HOSC believes in advancing a “Just Culture” environment at HOSC where every staff member has a voice, and is always treated with dignity and respect. A major benefit of working for us is a Monday through Friday work week without call, weekends or holidays. The primary hours of operation are 7AM to 5 PM. All candidates will participate in a shadowing experience as part of the interview process, where you will get to meet our team and observe our processes. Job Summary

Anticipates the needs of the surgical team. Establishes and maintains sterile field during surgical procedures in the operating room.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Ensures sterility of all supplies and instruments during set up of surgical procedures.
  • Assists circulating nurse and surgical team in maintaining sterile environment.
  • Assists circulating nurse in gathering necessary surgical supplies and equipment.
  • Is responsible for doing sponge, needle, and instrument count pre-operatively and intra-operative with the circulating nurse.
  • Gowns and gloves surgeons and assistants.
  • Assists in keeping physician preference cards accurate/updated.
  • Retains all specimens to be sent to pathology, confirming source/name of specimen with surgeon.
  • Transports all surgical equipment to appropriate decontamination areas. Assists in sterile supply with cleaning and reprocessing of instrument sets.
  • Picks materials, supplies and equipment for the subsequent day’s cases, and puts away any unused supplies at the end of each day.
  • Works with the team to remove outdated supplies from inventory.
  • Perform terminal cleaning of the surgical suite at the end of each day.
  • Interacts appropriately and effectively with all patients and visitors regardless of age or ethnic background.
  • Uses Standard Universal Precautions, appropriate hand hygiene, personal protective equipment, and safe practices to ensure personal safety and a safe environment.
  • Assists with environmental hazard and infection control surveillance and participates in emergency preparedness drills.
  • Follows all equipment and safety guidelines and is responsible for knowledgeable use and care of equipment.
  • Serves as a resource to other members of the health care team, and is open and willing to train and mentor new staff and surgical residents/medical students.
  • Attends in-services, conferences, and meetings as required.
  • Communicates effectively and courteously with visitors, physicians, and their office staffs, patients, and employees. Maintains patient, physician, and employee privacy and confidentiality per policy.
  • Maintains designated certifications such as CPR, as offered by the center.
  • Acts in accordance with the vision, mission, and business philosophy of the Center.
  • Complies with Policies and Procedures and adheres to safety guidelines to ensure a safe work and patient care environment.
  • Maintains a positive attitude and capable of multitasking and delegating as appropriate.

  • Completion of an accredited program in Surgical Technology (Certification required)
