How do I get into hand modeling?

To become a hand model, you should have well-maintained, smooth, and proportionate hands. Building a portfolio with high-quality photos, especially close-ups of your hands in good lighting, and reaching out to modeling agencies that specialize in hand or commercial modeling can help you start in the industry.

What are some common challenges hand models face on the job?

Hand models often encounter challenges such as maintaining flawless skin and nail health, as even minor blemishes or imperfections can impact job opportunities. Consistency in hand care routines is crucial, and avoiding activities that could lead to cuts, bruises, or sun damage is part of the daily responsibility. Additionally, hand models must develop the ability to hold precise and sometimes uncomfortable poses for extended periods during shoots, requiring patience and stamina. Working closely with photographers, stylists, and art directors is also common, so strong communication and adaptability are essential for success.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a hand model?

To thrive as a Hand Model, you need well-groomed hands, symmetrical fingers, clear skin, and attention to personal care, often with experience in modeling or related fields. Familiarity with posing techniques, industry-standard photography, and sometimes agency representation are typical requirements. Patience, flexibility, and the ability to take direction well are important soft skills for this role. These skills ensure that hand models consistently meet client expectations for close-up product shots, commercials, and advertising campaigns.

What is a hand model?

A hand model is a professional who uses their hands to display products for photography, commercials, or films. Their hands are often featured in advertisements for jewelry, cosmetics, hand creams, or other items that require close-up shots of hands. Hand models must maintain their hands in excellent condition and may work with agencies or directly with clients. The job often involves holding products, performing specific gestures, or demonstrating how to use items. Attention to detail, patience, and flexibility are important traits for success in this field.

How much money do hand models make?

Hand models typically earn between $200 and $1,000 per day, depending on experience, the type of assignment, and the market. Top hand models with extensive portfolios or high-profile clients can command higher rates, especially for commercial, print, or advertising work.

Job description

Hand surgery is a specialty that demands everything. The anatomy is unforgiving, the cases are technically relentless, and the patients โ€“ when it goes right โ€“ get back something they thought was gone forever. The ability to open a jar. To play an instrument. To hold someone's hand.

You didn't spend years mastering microsurgery to spend your career fighting for OR time, chasing referrals, or practicing inside a system that undervalues what you do.

Genesis is building something different. And hand surgery is a core part of it.

The opportunity

We're a full-spectrum MSK platform โ€“ 16 clinics across Chicagoland, surgery to physical therapy, Medicaid to private pay โ€“ and we have a patient population that genuinely needs you. Hand and upper extremity cases are high-volume, high-variety, and waiting. You'll have a full case load from day one, 1โ€“3 APPs supporting your practice, and the infrastructure of Illinois' largest health system behind you.

But the real upside isn't the day-one volume. It's what you can build from it.

This is a partnership-track role with real equity potential โ€“ for a hand surgeon who wants to own something, not just work somewhere.

What you'll work on

The full upper extremity spectrum, including:

  • Complex hand and wrist reconstruction
  • Microsurgical nerve, tendon, and vessel repair
  • Peripheral nerve surgery
  • Fracture fixation โ€“ metacarpals, carpals, distal radius, phalanges
  • Soft tissue coverage and flap reconstruction
  • Congenital and post-traumatic deformity correction
  • Arthroscopic and open wrist procedures
  • Elbow pathology
  • Carpal tunnel, trigger finger, Dupuytren's โ€“ high volume, done right

Beyond clinical work: research and product development opportunities for surgeons who want to push the field forward, and access to Genesis's active clinical trial infrastructure.

Who we're looking for

BC/BE in orthopedic surgery with fellowship training in hand and upper extremity. Licensed in Illinois or eligible. But the credential is the floor, not the ceiling.

You're a technical surgeon who also thinks like a builder. You want referral relationships, a growing practice, a brand in the community โ€“ and you're willing to invest in building those things inside a platform that already has the foundation.

Microsurgery is in your toolkit, not just your CV. Complex nerve repairs, replantation, soft tissue reconstruction โ€“ you've done it and you want to keep doing it at volume.

You believe access and excellence are the same thing. Our patients span every socioeconomic background. The quality of care doesn't change based on the payer. That has to resonate with you.

You're ready to own something. Partnership and equity pathway aren't distant hypotheticals here. They're the trajectory.

The stack
  • Competitive base salary + performance-based incentives
  • Partnership and equity pathway
  • Full benefits โ€“ health, dental, vision, retirement
  • Malpractice coverage
  • CME allowance
  • 1โ€“3 dedicated APPs per surgeon
  • Shared call
  • EPIC EMR
  • Clinical research, product development, and team physician opportunities
About Genesis

Genesis Orthopedics & Sports Medicine is a full-spectrum MSK platform operating across 16 clinics throughout Chicagoland โ€“ surgery, physical therapy, and everything in between. We run clinical trials. We serve Medicaid patients at scale. We've built a care delivery model that delivers care the most underserved patients in Chicago can access, and that the most demanding patients still want.

One standard. Sixteen clinics. No compromises.

We're not a legacy institution moving slowly. We're a practice that ships โ€“ and hand surgery is one of the specialties we're investing in most aggressively.

If you're a fellowship-trained hand surgeon who's ready to build a practice that actually matches your ability โ€“ we want to talk.
