How does participating in hackathons as a software developer contribute to career advancement and skill development?

Participating in hackathons as a software developer offers hands-on experience working with new technologies, problem-solving under time constraints, and collaborating with cross-functional teams. These events often simulate real-world project cycles, allowing you to strengthen skills in coding, teamwork, and rapid prototyping. Additionally, hackathons can help you expand your professional network, gain visibility with potential employers, and build a portfolio of innovative projects that can set you apart in job applications.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Hackathon Participant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a hackathon participant, you need strong problem-solving abilities, programming skills, and a foundation in software or hardware development, often supported by relevant educational background or experience. Familiarity with coding languages, version control systems like Git, and collaboration tools such as Slack or GitHub is typically expected. Creativity, teamwork, time management, and effective communication are essential soft skills that help teams innovate under tight deadlines. These skills and qualities are crucial for quickly building functional prototypes, collaborating efficiently, and delivering impactful solutions during competitive hackathon events.

What are hackathons?

Hackathons are competitive events where individuals or teams collaborate intensively to create innovative solutions, such as software applications, hardware prototypes, or business ideas, within a short period—typically 24 to 72 hours. Participants often include programmers, designers, and entrepreneurs who work together to address a specific challenge or theme presented by the organizers. Hackathons encourage creativity, teamwork, and rapid problem-solving, and they are popular in the tech industry for fostering new ideas and networking opportunities. Many companies and universities host hackathons to promote learning, talent discovery, and community engagement.

Founding Developer Growth Lead

Nango

San Francisco, CA • On-site

$150K - $200K/yr

Full-time

Posted 25 days ago

Job description

(In San Francisco)
Nango (YC W23) lets developers build product integrations with AI. It enables applications to connect to the real world through integrations.
More than 400 paying customers rely on Nango today, including Replit, Mercor, and Ramp. We are a YC-backed, multi-million ARR company with a team of 14 from AWS, GitHub, Okta, Snyk, Netlify, Uber, Samsara, Workato, and other top-tier dev tools.
We are hiring a Founding Developer Growth Lead to make Nango known, trusted, and talked about by developers. Your job is to be deeply embedded in the SF AI/developer ecosystem, understand what builders are experimenting with, and turn that insight into demos, prototypes, use cases, content, events, community loops, and product ideas that resonate. You should be technical enough to build yourself and close enough to developer culture to know what feels exciting. You'll work directly with the founders.
What You'll Do
  • Build demos, examples, and starter projects that make Nango click for developers.
  • Spot emerging use cases around AI agents, MCP, tool-calling, and API integrations.
  • Turn new trends into demos, content, examples, events, and product ideas.
  • Spend time with developers, founders, and early AI teams in SF.
  • Bring community feedback and positioning insights back to the team.
  • Get Nango into relevant hackathons, meetups, demo nights, and builder communities.
  • Activate users and customers to share what they are building with Nango.
  • Experiment with short-form technical content across X, LinkedIn, GitHub, and YouTube.

Who You Are
  • You are a technical builder with strong distribution instincts.
  • You can prototype demos, understand APIs, read/write code, and speak credibly with developers.
  • You are excited to meet builders, attend events, test ideas, and create momentum in SF.
  • You understand developer culture and know what feels useful, exciting, or cringe.
  • You have high agency and enjoy zero-to-one work without a clear playbook.
  • You may be a former founder, early startup employee, growth-minded engineer, developer creator, or DevRel person.
  • You have experience or strong interest in AI products, agents, developer tools, APIs, OAuth, MCP, SDKs, or hackathons.

Location
This is an in-person role in San Francisco.
